Recursive Psychology

Yes, I've learned my lesson there, sadly!

quarridors

Ugh. I am sorry. I am also on the spectrum, and careful about who I tell for reasons like these.

This is uncomfortably similar to my experiences socialising with psychology post-grads studying autism who discover my diagnosis, The low point was when one asked if I would become a subject in a study about 'savant skills' when they discovered that I'm a digital artist.

quarridors

...I feel you, Bubs. Feeling you.

courtney

Sweet Caroline!

Yowza! The transcript is here: http://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2018/01/dude-you-broke-the-future.html

BobC

That's usually how with PhD candidates often go....

Jonathan Wallace

Is that a typo? Shouldn't it be "stories"? Or is it in fact "store"?

Tholfbutt

I get the feeling Bubbles didn't actually ask Evie about her PhD and Evie just launched into it.

Lucy

I was taking graduate machine learning (AI) courses at Ohio University, and, as the "old guy" in the class, I felt free to push some of the discussions when I could. We got on the subject of responsibility and accountability for AI mistakes. At one point, I asked, "So, if we ever get to the point of sapient software, how do our current approaches (recalls/off market and reprogramming) work if they are the equivalent of only two options: Death penalty or lobotomy?" I agree that our current approaches probably won't result in conscious AI, but that doesn't mean some other approach couldn't, and we'll be faced with these questions before we're ready.

David Days

Sorry to go all Parker/Stone here, but to paraphrase Tweak: Dad! The meta-critique man!

Yes, good, robot friends.

Luzahn

"Stories" in the second panel is misspelled.

Oh. Fug. I am both bubbles and not bubbles in this.

Stoodmuffin

Now I want 50+ strips of Evie and Momo discussing AI rights

Bagge

Actually, on reflection, she really does need to meet him. Provided she can tolerate/get past his surface offensive nature, he can provide some unique insights into the AI POV. The organics in his life probably don't realize this because he's only shared those thoughts with fellow companions, and only those in his size range.

Czarzhan

She needs to meet Pintsize. :)

Czarzhan

I like her, but she needs to learn to read a room.

Anna Phylaxis

...this is going to end with Evie stuffed into a trash can, isn't it.

Brian English

Is there another grad student studying the AI who's studying Evie? Recursion may be infinite, but funding isn't...

Dean Reilly

studying me studying you A-AA there is nothing we can't do

Seth Aaron Hershman has they she pronouns

I have to agree that I love it when this comic talks about AI and society despite (or perhaps because?) I personally think that conscious AI is very unlikely to develop--at least not from the simulation and deep learning branches of research currently ongoing. I would love it if that weren't the case, but meh. Meanwhile, I thoroughly <3 Jeph's robots livin' la vida robo.

Gary Walker

This is really interesting!

Cole Blackblood

BTW: anybody really interested in AI should check out this talk from Charlie Stross at C4C3: https://youtu.be/RmIgJ64z6Y4 Lot of interesting meat to chew on here.

Gary Walker

Damn. I'm so impressed I forgot to ship anything.

BobC

You know, I really appreciate this return to the AI-thinkverse and the ongoing contemplation of how the emergence of sentient AI didn't make that much difference, between a few PhD theses, however many AI companions, and a singularity somewhere along the way. I mean, it's astounding to me that QC has managed to hold together with such a strong philosophical core that, surprisingly, not only has very few contradictions, but also has so much room for thought, humor and thoughtful humor. And some amazingly diverse characters, especially among the AIs.

BobC

Meanwhile Mandy just HAS to be asking Faye: “So, you’re totes in lvoe, right?”

Andrew

It reminds me of some of Tom Siddell's work in Gunnerkrigg Court.

Might want to change "surprise surprise because those stores" (or some such - on a mobile) to "stories" before posting on the site. Love the dialogue here, though!

Mister Cletus

And who could blame her? ;D

Sexagesimalian

And a good thing for you too.

Every sociological study is based on somebody's lived experience. Bubbles seems to be objecting to sociology as a discipline.

There isn't a comparison. She IS a weapon. Well, for Evie's sake I hope the proper tense is, "She WAS a weapon." But I suspect the parts of her Corpse Witch blanked aren't the parts that would activate if the need arose.

Bubbles is literally a weapon of what, local destruction? Comparing her to a weapon couldn't be more correct.

Carl Fink

On another note I love the way Evie looks in the second panel. It would be interesting...and cute...to see updated “chibi” versions of the characters.

Will Weaver

those arms are weapons of mass destruction

Brian

She couldn't dig that hole any faster with a backhoe.

Alex Mullenix

"Some of us would resent being compared to weapons of mass destruction." is a great line. Especially with her arms crossed across her chest like that.

John Fiala

I, for one, welcome our tall muscular female artificial intelligence overlords.

Will Weaver

Picture the study sessions! Would they trip over each other, each trying to "Jane Goodall" the other? 😃

Jason
