Repairing or upgrading ship from salvaged parts taken from a "gently used" ship should be a trope in and of itself. As a person that never owned a new car in his life, I'm quite familiar with the vagrancies of the scrapyard. One has to make do with a part that might not be as old as the part it's replacing, has fewer hours/miles on it, or is less damaged than that older part. But you takes your chances. All my cars passed the emissions test and road worthiness tests, but just. I could tell that my last car was creeping closer to the limit and it wasn't old enough to be declared a classic, so there's that. Now imagining this with a spaceship... something hideously more complex than a '83 Mercury Marquis... Yeah... "No worries squire, that Zubrin Special passed it's certification with high marks!" "How high?" "Um... 5% over the minimum..."
