Coloring
Added 2025-12-01 01:39:24 +0000 UTCOne aspect of the dragon creator that hasn't been shown much yet is being able to change the color and texture of the skin. There are many ways this could be done with different levels of control, from a simple color picker to full blown free painting.
I looked into free painting briefly and while it does technically work, the main issue is that whenever you change the body of the dragon in any way besides morphing, like swapping out parts or making sections longer, the painted data for that part is lost and can't necessarily be transferred to the new part, which is kind of jarring and not a great experience. Working around this issue seems like it would be more complicated than it is worth, so unfortunately this coloring option won't make it for now at least.
Instead, there will be pre-made patterns/variations to choose from, where the colors can be changed freely but the pattern is fixed. I've also tested a variant that is like a combination of both, where a pattern is instead projected onto the body in a customizable location. This worked pretty well but needs more testing, so it's a possible improvement for the future.

Just a thought, maybe there's a way to do pattern sliders (i.e. how much of a pattern, transparency, edge fuzziness, color, etc). It may not have as much control as free painting, but it is a middle ground that offers less buggy behavior with a ton of variety. (If you want to get really in depth maybe even allow players to select what parts of the body patterns appear on)

So instead of tryin to add manually painting patterns, i'd just focus on preset patterns that can over lap, be sectioned by body part, and have an opacity slider. Those 3 things alone already add so many combos and ability for unique design. Plus most ppl dont have have the ability to hand drawn patterns and make them look natural so ur average player base my use the preset patterns regardless.
