Patreon Ramble #31 - The Internet is Amazing, The Internet is Bad and AI Art

Hey all!

Here's the November Patreon ramble!

In it I talk about a toilet paper gift package, my new feature film that I released and some frustrations related to comments on my latest upload.

Hope you are all having a lovely end to your month.

Thanks for the continued support.

Love, Joel Haver

That is indescribably rough and almost callous, to break up with someone using a movie... I hope you rehabilitate well... Rough

hey joel, believe it or not my ex gf broke up with me using 'we have to leave here together' so that movie will forever hit me in a spot that you may not have ever intended. I introduced her to your stuff. so her using 'we have to leave here together' to tell me that it isn't anything to do specifically with me, but that we just aren't compatible in the way she needs/wants, was quite amazing. i rewatched it after we were over and cried in a whole different way. love ya joel the whole Ai art thing is just another example of people saying seat belts will kill more. people will always be afraid of new things. Ai art is a new tool to be used. michael from vsauce was just on the safety third podcast and the topic of "do you own your art?" came up in relation to content aggregators/re-posters. Michael said it pretty well in that you, as the creator, are entitled to profit from your art but you don't own it. you put it out there and it becomes it's own thing to each person. I feel the Ai art thing is similar.

1. Your film was amazing, another chef's kiss 🤌 perfect amount of surreal and real and realistically awkward and slow yet poignant to the point where it's ability to feel like home and creep into a climax of chaotic emotion hits exactly like a real relationship. Folks often wonder what it was like living at the time of davinci or leonardo, i feel that way about you sometimes, like holy shit he did all that before he was thirty?! And also like, davinci probably wasn't world renowned in his lifetime. 2. Couldn't agree more about Ai being another tool and your parallel to every other game-changing tool is totally spot on, especially regarding people's reactions, however natural they are. 3. I've been thinking about parasocial relationships ever since you mentioned them a few videos back. It's pretty enlightening for me and explains the small void that slowly sucks away at you while the experience all around the void fills you with joy (my mind is clearly still in your film :). Your level of concern about comments isn't too surprising given your age and growing up in youtube, but considering your wisdom and intelligence it seems like you could also not have it :). I guess it's the other side of a parasocial relationship. Us not truly knowing you is what fucks with us, and it seems like your distorted view of us seems to fuck with you. It must be even weirder for you, your brain probably trying to imagine 1.67 million people as this one akira blob. A blob that like 90% loves everything you do and then like %10 bitches at you. I don't have your youtube stats but I bet we are mostly early 20's dudes, but we are certainly also teens and kids, and if you think about it collectively we are just a person who is emotionally stunted at various ages and maturities. All this weirdness plus the fact that unlike you who can express themselves beautifully and clearly we have little keyboards and text boxes and all our intents and feelings are things you cant see and just have to make a best guess at. I think most commenters (myself included) often forget how easily our vibe can be mis-interpreted. "Thats it im leaving joel" sounds like a pretty clear vibe, but its also probably just a raw moment someone expressed without thinking too hard, the way that person wouldn't in a real interaction because they actually love the other person. Yes the internet sucks and distorts everything and human emotion and interaction gets twisted through its amplifiers and missing parts but so far I think you do it the best of anyone I've seen. Parasocially or not, you appear to rule. - YOUR DEAREST FRIEND :P
