Dr. Who Reaction- Easter Special - Legend of the Seadevils

Comments

If it weren't for the excellent final five minutes, this story would never get a rewatch from me. As others have said, this suffered from last minute editing - I believe it was originally 60 minutes, but needed to be cut down to 45. The Sea Devils were Classic Who monsters, which made their debut on the Revived show even more of a disappointment- but we need to bear in mind that this was shot (as was the Flux epic) during the dark days of Covid...so it's actually quite admirable that they managed to put together something on this scale. *edit* just listened to your closing remarks...we are in sync this week :D

"What's the plan? For getting out of here, for finding Dan, for stopping whatever fin-face here is up to?", "I'm going to keep him talking till he reveals himself ... and then I'll dazzle you with a beautiful bit of improvisation.", "You mean there's no plan.", "Early days." Yaz and the Doctor, "Legend of the Sea Devils" This was the first newly-released Doctor Who story we could talk about behind your back on your discord server's Spoilers section. "Stop right there! Sea Devil.", The Doctor, "Legend of the Sea Devils" I enjoyed this story - not nearly as much as "Eve of the Daleks" - but my enjoyment was probably mostly the return of an iconic Classic Who monster, and not negatively dragged down by any personal disgust of pirate stories. The original Sea Devils' story was written as a "sequel" to the first Silurian story by the same author, Malcolm Hulke, using the Sea Devils as a species related to the Silurians. The design of the Sea Devils' face was based on a sea-turtle. BTW: The name "Sea Devils", like that of the "Ice Warriors" is not their own name for themselves - they were named by humans shocked by seeing the monsters for the first time. It was the same with the "Silurians" - although they were actually named by the Doctor as a reference to that particular geological era - incorrectly as it happens. "Is the Hua-Shen ready to hunt? Let it seek. Let it feast.", Chief Sea Devil, "Legend of the Sea Devils" In one of the previous two appearances of the Sea Devils in Classic Who, there was what is often regarded as one of the worst monster costumes in Classic Doctor Who, the Myrka. After seeing that we were dealing with Sea Devils in this story, I was really hoping that the story would include a flashy CGI version of the Myrka and dismiss forever the memory of that costume - the concept of the monster was fine, it was just the rather silly monster costume they used. But they didn't have that particular monster - instead they have a giant Hua-Shen sea creature - the Myrka was merely corridor-sized. However, according to the showrunner the Myrka could be an off-spring of the Hua-Shen. I suppose so. "I always thought that I'd learn the constellations, but then I just downloaded an app on me phone. But I haven't got me phone with me.", Dan, "Legend of the Sea Devils" Dan's funny. We like Dan. "How old are the boys?", "Three and six. I promised I'd return with the treasure as release payment. The longer I take, the less likely I am to see them again.", Dan and Madam Ching, "Legend of the Sea Devils" I like our change of sympathy once we understood the real motivation of Madam Ching from treasure hunter to seeker of a ransom payment. "This is where a time machine comes in handy.", "Exactly. We find out what happened to Ji-Hun, maybe pick up the lost treasure, zoom back to bargain with Madam Ching and track down those Sea Devils.", Yaz and the Doctor, "Legend of the Sea Devils" The story gets a bit confusing as we start in 1807 and then use the TARDIS to jump briefly back to 1533 to set up a back story for Ji-Hun, the treasure, the keystone and the ancestor of the villager - and then return to 1807. Only for Ji-Hun, after being in stasis since 1533, to end up sacrificing himself in 1807. "I wish ... I wish this would go on forever.", The Doctor, "Legend of the Sea Devils"
