Peter is such a wonderful communicator. The letters and how for short time men were able to put down their weapons and behave as human beings, really underlines the futility of war. xx

Thanks for sharing that video. I've seen other letters from that channel, but not that one. I have to say that I was approaching the end of the letter with some dread because I thought we would perhaps learn that the letter's author had died on the battlefield soon afterwards. But Armes returned home to his family after the war and died in 1948.

It is almost impossible to get your head around the incident. Back in 1914 most of the the British soldiers would have volunteered to go and "serve their country" with a few regular soldiers who were already in the army when war started. There was no conscription until 1916. I don't know if it was a similar situation for the Germans. I do know that there were a series of separate truces all along the Western Front.
