No I haven´t seen the Tv show Red Dwarf, I have never heard of it in the first place. :)
That gravity line was sooooo good. :D
I know what you mean, but I don´t think they brought Missy back to soon. Well, I guess I´m a little biased here, cause she is one of my all time favorite characters of this show, but I stand by my opinion :D :D
Yeah I saw those callbacks, so nice to implement them every now and than. It gives the show so much more depth. :)
I didn´t remember that "Idiots Lantern" callback...I wonder why I forgot about that episode :D

"Hang on a minute! Davros is your archenemy now?", Missy, "The Magician's Apprentice"
Oh, you have a "Holly" from "Red Dwarf" look going on, with your head appearing to float on the black screen. I imagine you haven't watched that British SF comedy show - and the British accents could be a bit extreme - but the computer character in the show looks quite similar to your new screen.
"Gravity!", "I know!!", The Doctor and Missy, "The Magician's Apprentice"
This is a strong start to the season - although with a slightly orphaned first act. I do like Missy, but possibly wondered if it might have been a bit too soon after the previous season's big finale to bring her back. But the interplay between Missy and each of our heroes is great.
The space bar at the Maldovarium ("The Pandorica Opens") had a bit of the Star Wars Cantina feel again. They re-used a number of aliens here - including ones that we'd only seen in "The Sarah Jane Adventures". It's nice that they have alien cameos like this.
And the callbacks to the Shadow Proclamation and to the planet Karn again all go, as you point out, to tie our Doctor Who universe together into a complete on-going story. Oh, and Missy's vortex manipulator - "cheap and nasty" time travel - a callback to Captain Jack of course.
The Doctor with his electric guitar is cool. And he uses a "Magpie Electricals" amp - another callback ("The Idiot's Lantern").
I like the reintroduction of the moral dilemma posed in "Genesis of the Daleks" - "If someone who knew the future pointed out a child to you and told you that that child would grow up totally evil, to be a ruthless dictator who would destroy millions of lives, could you then kill that child?". I'm glad you've previously seen that story. It's nice they put in the Classic Who audio callbacks - allowing Classic Who fans to try to identify each one.
"And I've introduced the word 'Dude' several centuries early.", The Doctor, "The Magician's Apprentice"

Peters band was called the dream boys very punk. Craig Ferguson now a famous US talk show host was also a member. There is another prequel called the doctors meditation if Andrew has not told you about it I will send you a link. It leads right into the episode.

Haha yes Clara beeing more clever than UNIT was a little weird indeed. :D I didn´t really realize it while watching but looking back at it, it´s a little much :D
Capaldi is great with his guitar, I´m impressed :)
Thank you for letting me know about the music video :) I´m gonna watch it soon :)

Insufferable? That´s a harsh word to be honest, but I get your points. Especially the "end of the life cycle" one felt weird for me, too. To be honest I felt as if I had missed another clue, because it didn´t really make sense to me either.
Thank you so much for your point of view about the episode. I find it especially interesting reading opinions if they don´t align with my own. Cause it always gives me new perspectives :)

I didn´t spot the axe joke, so thank you for letting me know about that one, gonna pay attention on my rewatch. :)
Oh so he is a guitar player? Wow, I didn´t think of him as a guitar person for some reason :D
I agree, I love this story. I mean, I don´t know the ending yet, but the first part is so intriguing I can´t wait to continue watching :)
Thank you for letting me know about the TV Show Green Wing. I have found some episodes on Youtube , on the Channel "Absolute Jokes". Unfortunately no Streaming Service in Germany is currently streaming the show though.

I remember not liking this series much on first viewing, mainly because of how much I'd disliked series 8 and that I had got tired of Clara. That changed over time though, this is one of my favourite series. And this is a great opening to it. My only issue is how Clara is treated here as being smarter then everyone else at UNIT. I mean it really needed Clara to point out the planes could be used to bomb buildings? No one working for this organization that's been battling alien invasions since the 70's thought of that? But it's a minor niggle, everything else is so much fun and I love the Doctor with the guitar and yes that really is Capadi playing.
A fun fact is that he is actually cousin of the singer Lewis Capaldi and stared in a video of Someone you loved for the Give Life charity which I recommend giving a watch.

This is an episode of two halves for me (and just goes to show how tastes differ) because I find the first 25 minutes of this episode quite insufferable! Airplanes motionless in the sky is a neat idea, but this storyline goes absolutely nowhere. Neither does any of the UNIT stuff. Nor, worst of all, does the 'Doctor has come to the end of his life' plot, because we know full well that he hasn't - he's recently been granted an entire regeneration cycle! FINALLY,at the mid point of the episode, the actual plot takes over and everything becomes a great deal more interesting. We suddenly take a deep dive into Dalek history: Skaro; Davros; the Kaled war; the different Dalek designs; the recreation of the studio sets from the first Dalek story back in 1964; even the Fourth Doctor from Genesis of the Daleks! Davros is properly scheming, and he and the Daleks appear to be completely in control, and the Doctor out of his depth. It's clear,in retrospect, that this episode was constructed around the cliffhanger, but that there was simply not enough plot to get us there. I adore the second half...but not enough to award the whole more than a 7.5

Really pleased that you enjoyed this episode so much, great performances here from Peter, Jenna and Michelle. There are some extra scenes attached to this, I expect Andrew will tell you about them. Peter Capaldi is indeed an accomplished guitar player, he was in a band before he became an actor. Multi talented man.

CLARA: Wow, we're doing charm as well, now, are we? Which one of us is dying?
(The Doctor suddenly hugs Clara.)
CLARA: Okay. And we're doing hugging now, too. I can't keep up.
DOCTOR: Well, you know what they say. Hugging is a great way to hide your face.
You are right. This is a great, epic opener for the new series. I would probably give it a nine point something. Just the opening scene alone, with the boy's identity revealed is enough to make it special. And the changes in the Doctor's behaviour and demeanour when he thinks it may be his last day are pretty awesome. Did you spot his terrible joke about it being an "axe fight", hence the electric guitar? It probably was him playing it too as Peter is a really good guitarist in real life.
Love this one so much. Clara and Missy having to work together even though they don't like or trust each other is kind of funny and kind of terrifying. After all, we have just seen Missy kill a man who she has noticed must have a wife and a baby just to prove she hasn't "turned good". And yes this is a great Dalek story at last. Or at least a great Davros story as the Daleks are very much in the background until those late scenes where they exterminate Missy, Clara and the Tardis. And Peter does a great job of reacting to the second of those three.
I don't know if you can stream or otherwise obtain UK Channel 4 shows from Germany but Michelle Gomez was in a comedy programme called Green Wing where she gave a performance almost as weird and wonderful as she does here as Missy. It's about the staff of a British hospital and is often pretty surreal. From Wikipedia:
"Caroline's main rival for Mac's affections is Sue White (Michelle Gomez), the Scottish staff liaison officer employed to listen and respond to the problems of East Hampton's staff. Sue is hostile and contemptuous towards everyone except Mac, whom she loves to the point of madness"
