Christmas Episode 2013 - The Time of the Doctor

I have no words for this one.....................

Christmas Episode 2013 - The Time of the Doctor

Comments

I have a Fourth Doctor scarf as well. Which I like much more! I did just remember something which I don't think anyone has mentioned, and which I didn't even notice the first time I watched this episode. (Oh no! He's off again!) When Matt's Doctor first sees the crack in the wall and there is a flash back to the first time he saw it in Amelia's house, there is also a flash back to the episode in the strange hotel. The one where there is a room for everyone's biggest fear. In that episode we saw Matt look into Room 11 and say "of course, who else would it be?" But when don't know what he has seen. In this episode we do see that it is also the crack in the wall/universe. Why on earth he would call it "who else" rather than "what else" is a mystery. Most people seem to think that Steven Moffat didn't have the crack in the universe in mind at all when he wrote the hotel room scene. I thought that The Doctor probably saw himself. Or maybe even River! But I guess Moffat couldn't resist putting in one more reference to earlier stories so he decided to make in the crack!

Yes that backround picture was spot on. :D I was so happy about this when I saw the episode :) Yeah the naked stuff was weird, I agree. Don´t know why that needed to be in there. I didn´t notice that cracker poem. I really have to pay attention to that in the editing. Thanks for letting me know :) I didn´t notice the giraffe dance, I´ll pay attention to that one, too, thanks :) I always love the music in the episodes, unfortunately it makes the editing for Youtube so much harder, cause the BBC doesn´t want any of it in my reaction videos. I will miss Matt sooo much. He was great indeed !

Nicologik

I will look up that scene again. I have edited it already, but didn´t pay attention to that picture in detail. I don´t really know how I could have missed that main plot of the movie. I was probably too confused of everything else that was going on. :D Thank you for not spoiling anything about the new doctor. :) Yes Amys appearance broke my heart.

Nicologik

Yes I remeber those first episodes with Matt. I didn´t really like him in the beginning. What a change :D I will keep an open mind for this new doctor :) I liked the Cameo of Amy as well, but it broke my heart. Thank you for the info about the wigs and about Peter. :)

Nicologik

I agree, the episode was a little odd, like I said it felt more like a finale to me, than a regular Christmas episode. But then again, it was a finale, the finale episode of Matt, so in the end it makes sense. Thank you for the explanation about the regenerations :) You have a fourth doctor hat? If you do, please don´t eat it, I´ll try my very best to get attached to him :D :D

Nicologik

What, Matt was really bald? Wow ok, I thought it looked to real while watching, but I just assumed the makeup was made really well :D

Nicologik

Haha I have the feeling people love to see me suffer :D :D Thank you for your thoughts about the episode. And will give every new doctor a chance. It´s just in those first minutes, and it might also take days or weeks, but I will keep an open mind, don´t worry :)

Nicologik

Well thank you Ian, I´m glad I can lift up your mood with my suffering :D How was that TV special awful? Hey, why can´t Dr. Who be my Twilight? :D I´ve never seen Twilight anyway so I do have the right to look for cuteness in other shows :D :D "( which *ahem* you watched )" Is it just me, or is your comment full of sarcasm today ? :D And well, I think we have already established, that I freaked up that movie reaction. So yeah.... I really didn´t get that one either. Wow one series smashed into a one hour special? No wonder it felt weird and rushed. :/

Nicologik

I agree, the fight scenes were important as well, I just wish I would have gotten a little more Matt :D I can´t wait to watch the next episode either. It feels exciting not to know anything :)

"You must patch the telephone device back through the console unit.", Handles, "The Time of the Doctor" Now, the first thing I noticed from the start of your intro, was how well your background was going to match the evening village scenes in the episode. So much so, that I wondered initially whether you had added the background to your video AFTER watching it. But it was then apparent that you hadn't, because of your reaction. I didn't rate this one very highly - partly because of the inevitable comparison between this episode and the fabulous "The Day of the Doctor" special - but mostly because it was a bit too much like throwing every monster we've ever had at the Doctor in the finale. And it was also a bit too similar to the Pandorica Alliance stuff. But there were some nice bits, like the awkwardness with Clara's family and the return of the Crack. But there were some other bits that I didn't find very good, like the tedious naked church stuff and the working of the Silence into it. The fact that, having learned that the Doctor aged hundreds of years off-screen before the Lake Silencio business, we now have a single episode when the Doctor ages hundreds and hundreds more. So in one regeneration cycle (actually in only two stories) the Doctor has doubled his age. I also liked the Christmas cracker sequence, where Clara sweetly helps the weak and aged Doctor to pull the cracker, and then the Doctor wants a joke but instead the cracker has a poem: "Eleven's hour is over now; the clock is striking Twelve's". Which now means more to us than it did when Clara first read it. I don't know if you spotted it, but Matt does his drunk giraffe dance (that we saw at Amy's wedding) again. There was a quick reference to a Classic Who story when the Doctor uses a Galligreyan Seal to perform a translation. It's nicely subtle - one of those references that having seen the original story in question, takes you a moment to work out. The 12-regeneration/13-body issue. As mentioned above, this was a throw-away plot device in a Classic Who story back when nobody would have thought that it might come back to bite the production when we had used up that many Doctor actors. So Moffat, needing to do something, wrote a story where it was all waved away when the Time Lords behind the Crack granted him a new cycle of regenerations. So that's all right then. The music cues were wonderful - really wonderful. We hear the sweet "Impossible Girl" theme when Clara is seen, but the cue we hear during the extended regeneration sequence is "The Long Song" from "The Rings of Akhaten" (mixed with the Trenzalore theme). For me, I found that the music cue sounded very familiar but I couldn't immediately place it - until it finally clicked about what cue it was and it made sense. "I will not forget one line of this. Not one day, I swear. I will always remember when the Doctor was me.", The Doctor, "The Time of the Doctor" The bow-tie falls to the floor. Matt, you were great!

Just to add that Matt was indeed bald during this episode he shaved his head for a film called how to catch a monster, hence the wig.

So we have actually seen this Doctor before in the David/Matt movie. This is the bit I referred to in my comment on that episode. I don't know if you've edited it yet but have another look at the scene where all the Doctors turn up to save Gallifrey. The 13 lives thing. Yeah that's been around since classic but as we was only on the 4th Doctor at the time they probably didn't think they'd get through another 9 Doctors. It was also the main plot of the TV movie you watched a couple of weeks back with the Master wanting to steal the Doctor's remaining regenerations because he's used all his. I kind of think of it as like a battery. A limited amount of power to use up. This way however they've addressed the issue and now reset the limit so a new lot of 13 regenerations which should keep it going for a good while. Not gonna comment on the new Doctor yet. You need to make your own mind up but I will remind you that you felt the same when David left and Matt took over. As for this story. I place it 48/140 and give it 4/5. I wasn't really keen on it when I first saw it and I do wished we'd had the original plan of most of trhis stuff being the story line for a 4th series with Matt. I do love the scene at the end though. Matt's speech about change is great and I always get emotional when Amy appears.

Nicole I was also worried about you, but you've already trained, you've already gone through several regenerations. Yes, a beloved doctor has passed away, but you remember the time when you accepted Matt's doctor with such difficulty, and you see that you mourned his departure. Believe me, you will also love the doctor played by Peter, maybe more slowly than the previous three... But... It is in 2nd place for me, which is not a bad performance at all! Back to Amy: Only the appearance of the "little" Amelia was planned, luckily Karen Gillan, who plays the role of "Nebula", had a filming break and was "on hand" to come back in a cameo to see the Doctor one more time I really liked his cameo, but it was too short... Curiosity: 1. Both Karen and Matt were in wigs for their other roles. 2. You've seen Peter several times in DWU, you can even (should) spot him for a moment as the Doctor.

This is a very odd episode in a number of ways. Firstly it seems like we are seeing Matt Smith's greatest hits with all the call backs to the other aliens he has encountered, the crack in time, rebooting the universe, the cult who tried to "engineer a psychopath" to kill him (River Song), the drunken giraffe dance etc. It does work for me but that might be (as other people have said) because I have only ever watched it already knowing that it is Matt's final adventure. I did find the bit about nakedness kind of weird but I loved Clara's grandmother's reaction to it. The other woman at the Christmas meal isn't Clara's mother because her mother died when Clara was very young. She is her father's second wife and the rest of the family don't seem to get on with her very well. Especially when she buys Christmas crackers with poems in them instead of silly jokes. The reason for this being (in theory) The Doctor's last incarnation is explained when he tells Clara about "Captain Grumpy" i.e. the War Doctor counting as a regeneration even though he didn't call himself the Doctor. And David Tennant's regeneration in that Stolen Earth episode where he managed to turn back into himself. So he has used up all the twelve regenerations he was supposed to have. But after Clara appeals to the Time Lords to help him "if you love him" that crack in the sky opens and they send down a whole lot of regeneration energy which gives him twelve more regenerations - a whole new cycle. If the programme still exists after he has used up that lot too, the scriptwriters will have to think of something new. Please take your time with the new Doctor. He grows on most people much more slowly that the last two did. But if you don't cry again when he goes I will eat my Fourth Doctor hat.

I was dreading this episode, because I knew how upset you would be. The power of this show is incredible, and it’s a bit unfair on you because we knew Matt was leaving when the show went out. So It was a bit easier, but still very emotional. A great episode full of action and drama. You already mentioned that It took time for you to love Matt. Matt is my favourite Dr. It was sad to lose him. Peter is a great actor and it will take time to get used him. But stick with it he is a really good dr and you will grow to love him. Of course he is older and maybe David and Matt’s youth appealed to you. It was established in the classic series that the doctor only has 12 regenerations. Now he has been given a new set of regenerations by the timelords. Please give Peter a chance you will get there. Incidentally I have seen this episode at least twice, and I still cried along with you. Sending hugs. xxx

I take pleasure in your suffering. Bwahahaha! Oops - terribly sorry about that...where was I? Oh yes, this episode: It's worth bearing in mind that, for those watching in the UK back in 2013, it was well known that this would be a regeneration story. Not only that, we also knew who the next Doctor would be; because he'd been announced in a truly awful Live TV 'special' (which brought an entirely new meaning to that word!). In addition, he actually popped up (very very briefly) in the 'all the Doctors teaming up' sequence in DOTD (go back and have a look, if you don't believe me). To anyone else, of course, this story would come as a bolt out of the blue. Nonetheless, I guarantee that you'll end up liking #12 greatly. His deliberately older appearance is explicitly referring back to the Classic series (Peter Capaldi was in fact the same age as William Hartnell), and his Doctor's personality is very much in line with the earlier Doctors, and NOT with Tenant or Smith - but don't worry, you'll adapt to the difference quite easily. ("Cute Doctors". Oh, Nicole, please - this is Doctor Who....not Twilight!) As for the 13 lives: this was well-known and accepted lore in the Classic series; but it was actually mentioned TWICE in the 8th Doctor TVMovie (which *ahem* you watched) Not that it matters any more anyway, because he's now been gifted with a whole new regeneration cycle - BUT, it needed to be addressed within the episode for the benefit of Classic fans, hence why the Doctor brings it up.. As for the episode - I always find it a mess (except for the last 15 minutes, which are stunning). Basically, Matt Smith had signed a three-season Contract, and it was expected that he would stay on for a fourth; but he felt (as did several of the other Doctor actors before him) that he was in danger of being identified ONLY as the Doctor in peoples minds, and so wanted to leave before that happened. As a result, Moffat needed to take his ideas for Smith's Fourth Season and smash them down into a one-hour Special...and it shows. There's just TOO much going on (and, as you pointed out, the introduction of Clara's family seems hugely brief!) Love that final scene with 11 and Clara (and Amy). I never get tired of watching it. Smith is my favourite Doctor of the revived series - but (for what it's worth) Capaldi, for me, takes Second Place very comfortably. Continue watching - and enjoy :)

Ian Smith

Ahhh, here we go. 11s Regeneration is definitely a good one. I know you wanted more scenes of 11 being funny etc but the fight scenes were trying to put into perspective just how long this war has been going on for, how long the Doctor has been defending this planet. 10s Finale was a lot more human oriented (Is that the right phrase?) and dragged out like you wanted. They cant just do the same thing every regeneration, every Doctor has to be unique yknow, so they really went out with a bang on this episode. But I see your points. I truly cannot WAIT for you to get to the next episode with the new Doctor, I absolutely love him. For me I rank him even higher than Matt, putting him as my second favourite Doctor just behind David. Please try to give him a chance. Though I know thats easier said then done because this is how Doctor Who works with the emotions like you said.
