The night of the doctor Minisode and An Adventure in Time and Space

Important: Since Youtube once again didn´t want the Youtube Minisode video in my reaction I had to blur it, sorry. But here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-U3jrS-uhuo&ab_channel=BBC

Also sorry for the missing audio at the beginning of both the Youtube video and the movie. I guess I jinxed it, cause I worried too much. I already resolved the issue, so next week it´s going to work again. :) I tried to leave the first two minutes of the movie without any blur, but Youtube striked that as well. So I blurred it a little bit and successfully tricked Youtube. I hope it helps adjusting your video to mine :)

Oh thanks :)

BBC = British Broadcasting Corporation.

WOW thank you so much for this comment Andrew. I thought I knew how everything works after reading the Patreon comments, but having this summary was really helpful to get the full picture. Now I´m really curious if we, as a viewer some day, will travel back in time, and see the story of this "war doctor" that had his story before we even started New Who. Wibbly wobbly timey wimey once more, and my brain feel fried again :D :D

Nicologik

Thanks for explaining that it was all meant in a humorous way. Sometimes it´s hard to tell if it´s only written down somewhere, and one can´t see the persons face or hear the tone of the voice. Don´t worry about the Youtube comments, this video is already on Youtube but is a "members only" video, which are 2 people at the moment. So I guess that saves me from all the comments :) I didn´t put it on members only for that reason though, just in case anyone would think that. It´s for the simple reason that I do not have the time to edit all that extra content at the moment, and members only is the exact copy of the Patreon video. So no extra work :)

I've not had the chance to see this video yet, but from one of your replies I think you're still confused, so here's a spoiler-free summary: (a) when the BBC cancelled the classic series in 1989 the current Doctor was the Seventh Doctor; (b) in the 1996 movie we see the Seventh Doctor regenerate into the Eighth Doctor, played by Paul McGann; (c) in the 2013 minisode we see the Eighth Doctor regenerate into someone credited as the War Doctor, played by a young John Hurt; (d) in "The Name of the Doctor" we see a much older version of the same person, still played by John Hurt. We also know that the Ninth Doctor regenerated into the Tenth Doctor, we saw the Tenth Doctor regenerate but stay as the Tenth Doctor (in the Series 4 finale) and then later we saw the Tenth Doctor regenerate into the Eleventh Doctor. So there's a gap: we haven't seen anyone regenerate into the Ninth Doctor. It was always assumed by viewers that the Eighth Doctor regenerated into the Ninth Doctor, but after this minisode we know he actually regenerated into someone else, described by the Eleventh Doctor (in "The Name of the Doctor") as his biggest secret. So it appears there is a previously unknown and unnumbered Doctor, played by John Hurt...

I intended to be toungue-in-cheek in my comments, but clearly they didn't come over that way! Nonetheless,I stand by what I wrote - especially when it comes to possible YouTube comments. I'm wondering if it might be worth your while adding a caption at the start, for your YT upload (some sort of disclaimer) stating that you now realize who that Doctor is; in order to reduce the number of people posting the same sort of thing that I did.

Ian Smith

You´re right about the regenration of Paul. I´m quite confused about the fact that he didn´t change into Christopher. But I guess, that´ll all be explained in the future. At least I hope so :) Thank you so much for all the info about the movie. It was a very interesting read :) :)

Nicologik

Thank you so much for making me feel better about my reaction fail. I very much appreciate that :) :)

Nicologik

Yeah I think I messed that one up :D But I´m glad you were able to laugh about it. You´re right it´s just so typically me :D hence the name of my channel :D It´s so strange that the 8th doctor turned into the possible 12th one. I don´t understand how that works. But I guess that´s the point of it all :D Thank you so much for the information about the movie. :) Oh that one line was a David Doctor reference? Wow that´s so cool :)

Nicologik

Thank you so much for your comment Stephen, I really enjoyed reading all the information about the movie. :) And I´m sorry I didn´t recognize Paul MC Gann in the minisode. I just didn´t think the name would be important later, cause I knew Christopher would be in series one of New Who. I thought he was just a one off character. I wish I would have remembered. The scene with Matt was so unexpected and heartbreaking, truly a very special moment in Dr. Who history :)

Nicologik

Thank you so much :) No I didn´t notice, but thank you for pointing it out :) It truly is a sad story, but such a great one as well. :)

Nicologik

Outch, that hurt....I´m happy you attached a second part to your comment, cause that lifted me up again, but that first part was harsh to read to be honest. I´m sorry that I did ruin the reaction for you, it wasn´t intentional. I was just so confused. When I watched the movie last week, I didn´t really care about the actors name, cause I thought it would just be a one of thing. Cause I knew Christopher would be the doctor in the first series, and this actor was just here for one movie. That´s why I didn´t recognize the name. And I didn´t recognize the looks cause of my face blindness. So there was no possible way for me to figure that out. I´m always trying to give my very best in a reaction, cause I do want people to enjoy watching it. I´m sorry I failed this time. Doesn´t mean it wont happen again, I´m just a human beeing, and this channel is called Nicole-Logic for a reason, but I´m sorry that it happened. Like I said, I´m happy I redeemed myself in your eyes with the movie reaction afterwards :)

Nicologik

Thank you so so much for all the info. I wasn´t able to put all those different doctors into a timeline, and your comment really helped with that :)

"Four minutes? That's ages! What if I get bored? I need a television. Couple of books. Anyone for chess? Bring me knitting!", The Doctor, "The Night of the Doctor" "The Night of the Doctor" was a surprise to me when I first saw it - I had stayed spoiler-free and didn't know who was going to appear in this minisode. It was great to see Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor again and actually get a regeneration scene. That had been one of the things that I had been slightly annoyed about. I knew that when New Who came back, the new audience didn't need to be overloaded with all the Classic Who history - but it rankled slightly that we had never got to see his regeneration. And, of course, we always assumed he would regenerate into Christopher - but now, as a shock, he regenerated into John Hurt. Wow! The mysterious group of women with the regeneration elixir is a callback to a Classic Who story. The 8th Doctor lists his past companions - these were companions from the Big Finish audio stories. "An Adventure in Space and Time" was a project - a passion project - by Mark Gatiss (the actor/writer we've seen several times on screen and writing). He first suggested a docu-drama of the origin of Doctor Who for ten years before this film was made for a celebration of the 40th Anniversary in 2003 - that's before New Who came back. The movie starts "The following programme is based on actual events ..." and that was basically right. It was quite close to the real events. There are some tiny historical errors that we, fans, like to spot e.g. the Doctor Who Annual is shown about a year before it was really published and contains artwork of monsters that hadn't appeared in the show at the time it was portrayed. The episode when the sprinklers came on was a different one than that which was shown. One time when "William Hartnell" is trying to perform a speech, the voice of the director is male - but in reality the director of that particular episode was one of the first female directors to work on Doctor Who. Minor stuff like that. But they really did a great job of showing the difficulty of getting the show produced. It's delightful to see people in monster costumes wandering around - and having it trigger memories of the episodes they were in. But the wonderful thing for Classic Who fans were the cameos! So many cameos! I didn't spot them all on my first viewing but that was still wonderful. We see the actor who played the male schoolteacher in the first episode, the actress who played the granddaughter, the actor who was the main antagonist in an early historical story, the voice actor who voices the Daleks in New Who (voicing the Daleks), two actors who played later Hartnell companions as guests at Verity's leaving party, the fan who hosted many of the DVD commentary tracks, and ... Matt Smith! They all have cameos. We have seen the actor who played William Hartnell quite recently in New Who - he was in "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship". This movie was truly a highlight for me of the 50th Anniversary shows.

Feel like some people are being abit harsh about you not realising that that was the 8th Doctor that you saw in the movie, in "The Night of The Doctor". If it makes you feel any better, back when I first watched it in 2013, I too didn't realise that was the 8th Doctor because I had never watched the film at the time. Its all good. 🤣

KrispyKrushems

So as others have said the Doctor in the minisode, that you didn't reconize is the same Doctor you just watched in the TV movie that you talk about at the start of this reaction. And the fact you mentioned that Andrew told you to look at the names at the end and the penny still didn't drop. All I could think was, yeah that's kind of typical for Nicole. It made me laugh though. You're also not the only reactor I've seen do this. Less obvious is the the person McGann regenerates into at the end is the same one we saw at the end of the finale, John Hurt. I don't think you not realizing is such a big deal. Obviously for long terms fans it was amazing to see McGann back after so long and getting a regeneration. But also it shows that the 8th Doctor from the movie is followed by the one we saw at the end of series 7. OK, I love Adventure in Time and Space and yeah even having watched it many times before I still tear up everytime at the Matt Smith appearance. Obviously some of it has been embellished in order to make the docudrama but, as far as I know, it's pretty much what happened at the time. Newman really didn't want bug eyed monsters, which he thought the Daleks were. and of course they were what made the show popular. But the phase regeneration was never used to change the actor. The word regeneration didn't get used until the end of the third Doctor. I also don't think it was Newman that talked to Hartnell about being replaced. As for the 'I don't want to go' bit while it was true that Hartnell loved playing the Doctor and would have liked to have continued the line 'I don't want to go' is a reference to the last line of Tennant's Doctor.

Jade Ellis

As you guessed this is a very fictionalised version of the real events. It's based on what really happened but some aspects are probably different and some are simply unknowable at this point. A lot of it is compressed (of necessity) into a shorter time frame of course and some of the characters involved in the creation of the programme have been blended together into one fictional character. Sydney and Verity are very much real though. I have heard different accounts by different people of William Hartnell's departure. Some say that he simply felt that he couldn't carry on, others that he was asked to leave. Most say that it was the second of those though. I think that the head of drama, Sydney Newman had actually left quite a while before he did so the scene we saw with the two of them couldn't have happened quite like that. And almost everyone agrees that it was William Hartnell himself who suggested Patrick Troughton as his replacement. A lot of people who appeared in the first Doctor's stories are also acting in this programme. William Russel who played Ian (one of the two original companions) is the BBC doorman who wants to see Sydney Newman's security pass at the beginning. And Carole Ann Ford who played Susan, the Doctor's granddaughter, is the woman who runs out into the street to tell her children that their tea is ready and "that programme" is about to start. There are loads of other cameos but I won't bore you with them. I liked both the reactions even though I was praying you would recognise Paul McGann in the first one! He does look quite different though and you have only seen the film once. Your reaction in the second to "I don't want to go" and the appearance of Matt in Hartnell's final scene is the same as mine and the same as all reactors that I have seen. Heart-breaking. But I think Matt was there so we could imagine William Hartnell seeing into the future of his programme and knowing that his legacy would last.

Stephen Males

Really enjoyed your reaction. Did you notice the woman who played Verity was the same actress who played the psychic in the episode Hide. This is such a sad story, but how marvellous that the show has continued constantly changing the central character.

A) Your Night of the Doctor reaction: 2 out of 10. My thoughts: Disappointing. Could do better. This was possibly the most anti-climactic reaction I've ever seen to this mini-sode! You read the name Paul McGann in the opening titles..? You watched him play the 8th Doctor just a few days ago in the The TV Movie..? Plot summary: This episode showed the 8th Doctor's regeneration. Got it now? OK, I'll say no more about this and will move swiftly on.... B) An Adventure in Space and Time reaction. 12/10. My thoughts: Brilliant! OK, you have FULLY redeemed yourself. You reacted in just the way you should. I even gave you two extra points for calling it The Elizabeth Tower (and not Big Ben). This was the best thing to come from the 50th Anniversary year, imo; and I'm very glad you enjoyed it as much as you (and I) did. It isn't 100% accurate, course (e.g. Sydney Newman left the BBC quite some time before William Hartnell's illness became an issue); but it lays down the early history of the show as economically as possible, given the 85 minute duration. Just a thought: When you come to upload Night of the Doctor for YouTube, brace yourself for the comments!

Ian Smith

I don't know if you say anything else about it in the rest of the video but after watching your reaction to Night of the Doctor I have to say that: The first Doctor you saw is Paul McGann, the Doctor you saw in the movie. But older and with shorter hair. He had already cut his hair shorter when the movie was made but the people making it didn't like this so he wore a wig. This minisode was released in 2013 and was the first time he had appeared as The Doctor since the movie was broadcast in 1996! So Paul; McGann was seventeen years later. The person he turns into is John Hurt, the Doctor who appeared at the end of the last episode in the Doctor's timeline. The one that Matt says "broke the promise". The image we see of John Hurt is actually a picture of him when he was a lot younger so his Doctor must have been around for a long time. Even if we didn't get to see him!
