Time of the Bonus 5: Xenogears, Citan, and Satan

This month, we're exploring the connection of Citan and the concept of satan.

Why do people call Citan a "fallen angel"? Where did the term even come from? And does the connection even make any sense? What other concepts from Xenogears map to the biblical concept of the satan? We attempt to explore some of these connection as we talk about the man we love to hate (but ultimately grow to love), Citan Uzuki. We don't know everything, but we sure as hell (ha!) try to figure it out.

Thanks to both Seth (Who Talks too Much) and Pat Holleman for helping us frame some of the ideas for this episode. Please enjoy! I hope that you can either learn something or teach us something along the way.

Next month's bonus episode will continue to study the character of Citan, more specifically, what his aesthetic and his other name can teach us about his personality and why he does what he does.

I'm finding a lot of these Xenogears episodes hold up really well on 2nd listens. I listened to the Intro movie bonus episode and both Citan episodes again recently. I think Citan arguably has the distrinction of being the most fascinating character in the most interesting story conceived for a video game, in my opinion. This morning I was thinking of how Citan and Ocelot share *some* similarities. The first run through of their respective games it's not easy to identify their motivations. Anyone that's played the MGS games knows who Ocelot admired. One thing I've wondered with Citan is why does he cooperate with Cain? It seems to be done out of respect for Cain. There's no evidence of Citan idolizing Cain in any way. Presumably, Citan is loyal to Cain because the emperor ultimately believes in humanity. Another thing I like about Xenogears is it doesn't give us all the answers. It encourages us to think deeply.

Stay tuned for Episode 40, where I talk about a dream I had about Rick Pitino.

What? Doesn't everyone know G-League legend Tacko Fall who plays for the Maine Red Claws? Haha but yes, basketball was a passion of mine until old age kicked in so it was much appreciated

Ha, I never know if people are going to get our sports references. -Chris

Listening to this specific cast (which is awesome btw) made me realize how much of the plot and it's symbolism/themes went over my head as a teenager and sadly an adult haha. Also I loved the Tacko Fall reference, made me chuckle
