Chapter 3 Shadow Tepig

There was another reason why Ash wanted to come to Unova. Trip may not have known about the Orange League, but the former champ had been to Unova before. Ash had asked him how his Dragonite knew so many moves. “I trained in the Unova Region, taking on the Battle Clubs.”

The Don Family held the lost knowledge of the Master Seeds awakening a Pokemon’s potential allowing them to learn additional moves. It was key to awakening a Pokemon’s full potential, and maximizing their abilities.

So when he learned there was a Battle Club nearby, that’s where he was headed. The Sandile with the sunglasses, or Shades was following behind him, due to personal reasons.

Plus he learned that battling helps affect a Shadow Pokemon’s aura. ‘Battle Clubs are a great place to battle new trainers!’

Meanwhile…

Juniper was looking to get more Shadow Hunters on the payroll, and it just so happened there were three ladies looking to become trainers.

With six trainers working on the case she believed the Shadow Pokemon trouble would be put to rest. One tiny problem, she didn’t tell the boys about this and also didn’t tell the girls about this either.

First was Iris, a rising star from the Village of Dragons, she had two Pokemon already an Excadrill and an Axew. Given this information Juniper signed her up. She chose Snivy seeing the Grass Starter as the most dragon-like. Her shadow detection tool was a ring, it’d glow in the presence of a Shadow Pokemon.

Second was Bianca, she was a new trainer and she wanted to help if she could. She chose Tepig as her starter. Her shadow scope item was a pair of glasses, the lenses would turn a purple shade when a shadow pokemon was near. Bianca kept the glasses around her neck on a chain.

Third was Burgundy, a self proclaimed master connaisseuse, she did go to school for it but her poor grades left her at a C Rank. She chose Oshawott and her shadow detection tool was disguised as a pen.

With Oak’s help Juniper was able to have the new gear ready. They were so busy rushing to get the new gear ready Juniper didn’t really have time to double check references. Bianca had no references as a new trainer but she was so gung ho about helping Juniper signed her up. Iris and Burgundy had both embellished their battle ability and qualifications.

“While you continue your duties as trainers, please keep an eye out for Shadow Pokemon. The more we can study them the more we can find a cure.”

Meanwhile

Team Rocket had touched base with Team Rocket HQ in Unova. The scientists had discovered a way of detecting a Shadow Pokemon’s aura, granting both Jessie and James special visors that’d activate whenever an infected mon was near.

They didn’t have SNAG machines or anything, but they were Team Rocket, stealing pokemon is what they do. So the Rocket agents received new and enhanced tech for capturing the shadow mons. “Intel says that Professor Juniper has prepared a task for to counter the threat as well, sending out a special machine with their trainers. If you can steal it from one of them so we can analyze it, that would be perfect.”

“We’re on the job!”

Giovanni knew how to play the long game, getting as much research on this new phenomenon was key to exposing Team Plasma. If they could be revealed, Team Rocket could look like the heroes while having the research to use for their own goals.

Given the severity of the mission, they were allowed to keep their Pokemon, and given balls to gain Unova Pokemon and any Shadow Pokemon they managed to catch.

Ash was having a blast with his new Pokemon, since he had a Pikachu and a Gible a lot of trainers wanted to battle it out with him. He did some double battles, rotating Oshawott in with Pikachu or Gible.

For single battles he had a good rotation sending Patrat in to battle and get the rage out. When he went wild Ash managed to call him back to his senses. Then there were the head pats, so nice!

Don George took notice of how Ash cared for his Pokemon.

The battles were great experience, plus Ash got to know and understand Oshawott, he was able to use his ability Shell Armor in unique ways. He also learned Fury Cutter. Even the ones who weren’t in battle got to watch.

After winning 20 battles he got to challenge the Don.

“So Ash, how would you like to battle me?” Don George asked.

“Heck yes!”

“If you win, I’ll give you a Master Seed!”

“Yes!”

“Pika!”

Before their battle could start, suddenly there was a fire in the food storage. “Don George come quick!”

“We can help Oshawott use Water Gun!”

“Osha!” He fired the move and worked to help put out the flames.

“Simipour use Rain Dance!” The large water monkey monster came out and conjured rain.

Working together the fire was put out. “What could have caused this?”

Ash felt a pulse of aura. “I think I know…” He ran off, feeling the shadow aura getting close.

“TEP!” An angry cry was heard, and suddenly dark flames were fired at Ash. The boy dodged at the last second, it hit the building and began to burn.

“Oshawott!” The Water Type acted fast. He used Water Gun to fight the fire.

His aura sight could see the Pokemon’s aura flaring. “PIG!”

“A shadow Pokemon.”

Don George arrived. “Wait...that Tepig…”

“I got this, Gible, Oshawott, let’s get him!” Ash called for a Dragon Pulse and a Water Gun. The two attacks were unleashed and hit their mark, but Tepig just looked mad.

He tried to unleash another Shadow Fire. “Gible dodge it with Dig!” Gible dove under ground, dodging the attack. “Oshawott use Razor Shell!” His scalchop glowed with water energy and he charged in.

Tepig was hit and knocked back. He got angry and looked ready to ram Oshawott with a Shadow Blitz, but as he charged Gible came up and hit him sending him flying up. “SNAG Machine on: Monster Ball Go!” Ash let the ball fly and it caught Tepig before he hit the ground.

Jiggle...Jiggle...Jiggle...Ping!

Ketchum breathed a sigh of relief. “Don George did you say you know this Tepig?”

“I do, a trainer a few days ago had come by to battle here, he was using fire types. His Tepig lost many matches and he said he was tired of it. That’s when…”

He had tied Tepig to a post and left him. “I brought him food and water, and he looked so sad.” When he tried to move him, he refused to leave. Even when it rained, morning and night he waited.

Then some members of Team Plasma came. “This poor thing, he must be liberated!”

“I thought they were helping Tepig but now…” Don George felt awful. “It must have come back looking for it’s trainer, but what happened to it, he looked so starved.”

“The door to his heart has been closed up, and he’s been made a Shadow Pokemon.” Don George had no idea, he couldn’t see the aura, he just saw the Tepig. No doubt he had either escaped or was let loose to run wild, but whatever was left of him had him come back here. “Even after everything that happened, he still came back looking for his trainer.”

Ash got him food and treatment, but like with Patrat, he was so angry he seemed agitated by others. “It’s okay Tepig.”

“Tep!” He growled at Ash, his aura turning red. “Pig!”

Tepig lashed out at Ash and blitzed him, knocking him back. “Pika pi!”

“I’m fine Pikachu.” He got up and moved toward Tepig again who stomped his hoof. “It’s okay Tepig!”

“Pig!” He charged at Ash again, hitting him, but this time Ash caught him.

“It’s okay!” The shadow Pokemon thrashed and even bit at Ash. “I bet you were really scared and lonely, you got pulled into the shadows but you fought your way back to find your trainer so you wouldn’t be lonely anymore.” The shadow fed on his despair drawing out a rage. “Tepig!” Ash called to him letting his aura wash over the fire type.

“Tep…” Ash got him to calm down, his raging aura returning to purple. Ketchum rubbed his back.

“You’re really strong Tepig, you don’t need that power. I’ll help you open your heart back up if you’ll let me. We’ll find a way to save you and all the other Shadow Pokemon. No matter what happens I won’t let you feel lonely anymore, we’ll be great friends!” Tepig relaxed and passed out. “Poor guy he must have been exhausted.”

He decided to let his mons rest, and he called Juniper to report. “I caught another Shadow Pokemon, this one was a Tepig who was abandoned by his trainer.”

“Oh my!”

“Patrat has been improving, I think he’s been opening his heart more to me, but there hasn’t been much of a change. After he responds to my call I think he’s a bit better, if only for a little bit.” Ash noticed that after battling Patrat has opened up more, he’s been showing more emotions.

“This at least means a Pokemon’s heart isn’t closed forever, we have a chance to reverse this.”

“I think I can start using him in double battles soon.”

“That’s great news Ash. We may need a catalyst to reverse the shadow pokemon effect, but we won’t know unless we can fully open their hearts.”

“Maybe I can use my aura to help break the shadow hold on them?”

“I wouldn’t try it unless you’ve fully opened their hearts, or the shadow power may release and hurt both you and the Pokemon.”

“Got it I’ll keep working with them.” He ended the call. It had been a long day, he checked into the club. Unlike the Pokemon Center the Club did charge rent for trainers to stay, but since Ash had helped put out the fire and save the Tepig, Don George gave him a room for free.

To be continued...Battle for the Master Seed

Ash battles Don George for the Master Seed, the victory isn’t easy but the Master Seed is on the line. Ash stays at the club to get more battle work done, and work on opening the hearts of the shadow mons. Iris arrives and gets confused seeing Ash with shadow Pokemon.
