Chapter 3
“Filthy Cur!” The royal entourage was pissed at Leon’s bold declaration.
“What is your game?” Greg snapped.
“Are you trying to humiliate the crown prince?” Jilk demanded.
“Still seeing him as the prince huh? You just can’t help yourselves.” Leon smirked. ‘I won’t humiliate him...too much...hehe!’ He still held some pent up aggression for these five from his previous life.
“Bartfort why are you doing this, unless you give me an honest answer I won’t agree to these terms?” Julius asked.
“Simple I plan to win. I’m treating you like any other guy, if you don’t want that then say so. This is how the world works!” It was true, girls could challenge each other and claim the other’s husband or servant if they wanted. It was risky as messing with the wrong family could lead to trouble. “Besides it’s just over summer break, even if you lose it’ll only cost you some precious free time.”
“We aren’t gonna lose to some hick!” Greg snapped.
“My my, isn’t that rude, looking down on me Greg? You don’t even know me. I thought you hated how nobles looked down on others without knowing their merit?” His words hit Greg hard.
“I uh…” He looked down. His heart fluttered in a burst of Doki Doki.
‘I know the dialogue in the games, I just tweak it to suit my style. Seems to work.’ Greg was the hard working noble, he was confident in his skills which was a double edged sword as he rushed into fights. Other nobles look down on Greg for being a meathead, and he hates how arrogant other nobles can be when they have no experience in battle. A bit ironic given how he acts and treats others.
“Your highness don’t agree to these terms.” Jilk said.
“Oh are you scared you are gonna lose, come on its five of you and only one of me.”
“We won’t lose!” Julius snapped. “I’ll accept the terms Bartfort, but know that when you lose you’ll face punishment from each of us!”
They expected Leon to back down but the raven haired Baron simply smiled. “Then it’s a deal, no going back on it now!”
“How you speak, do you truly plan to win against us?” Chris didn’t believe this would be a challenge.
The contest was set, a duel using suits of armor.
“I think you are just trying to look cool, I saw you and your friends get tossed out earlier.” Greg teased. “You have no idea who you are messing with, trash!”
‘Oh I know you, each of you, and truth is none of you are a match for me. You all need to be taught a lesson!’ Leon smirked. “You can try armor or hand to hand combat I’ll crush you completely. You are so busy looking down on me, careful you don’t trip over your own ego!”
“Why you!” Jilk stepped in and stopped a fight from breaking out. He offered Leon a chance to get four more people to help him but he refused.
“I told you I’m a gambling man, I’ll take you on each of you, one on one fights, five rounds!”
“The odds seemed to be stacked in our favor don’t you think.”
“Not really, this just makes this more fun when I win!”
“Do you really plan on winning?” Jilk asked. “It’s rare but people have lost their lives in duels.”
“I’m aware, do you think I’m so naive I might not die?” He fixed Jilk with a look. He was serious, Leon had the eyes of a man who has stared death in the face. Having both died in his previous life and nearly died obtaining Luxion that’s not a stretch.
‘Who is this guy? Is he really just some hic Baron?’ Jilk had a bad feeling about this but none of them had the balls to back down or get Julius to call this off. He was the prince and he made the choice.
‘That is why you fail!’ Leon thought.
“I hope you will be ready to face the consequences.”
“I sure am, and don’t worry I’ll be taking good care of you over break.” He grabbed Julius by his tie and got right in his face. “See you in the arena, Julius!”
Doki Doki!
Leon had a weird effect on him, his cheeks felt hot and his heart was pounding. ‘What is this feeling?’
-x-
Marie was pissed. ‘Who the hell does that trash mob think he is? It’s fine it’s not like those five would lose to a lowly mob right?’ She was panicking. Not because of the bet per say, if Julius had to break up with her she had four other nobles she could mooch off of. However, in the games if the love interests lost in the duel event they’d be stripped of their titles. ‘This means I could be kissing the sweet life goodbye!’
Ironic really Julius believed Angelica only cared about his title, money, and power, but was falling for a girl who ONLY cared about him for that stuff. Him and his entourage.
To add salt to her life the elf servant she got annoyed the heck out of her. In the game he was a cold but capable little brother type of character. In this world he annoys Marie to no end.
“Did you research into that guy?”
“Yes, Leon has some above average stats, but no one believes he can win against all five.”
“I see…” She smirked. ‘It’s a good thing I speed ran the romances getting those five idiots to fall for me was easy.’
-x-
Some guys vandalized Leon’s room even getting Daniel and Raymond to help. “They failed the friendship test.”
“Stop, they were just protecting their own futures.” Leon didn’t blame them, he was taking control of his own life and he was risking a lot getting involved like this. ‘I have to cover my ass just as they have to cover theirs.’
Placing bets on duels was common and Julius had the odds at 99%. He couldn’t even be pissed...he was but still...he was going up against the prince and his entourage. “If that’s how it is, I’ll be betting on myself to win, this is gonna be good!” He had 500 platinum pieces prepared and bet on himself.
“Isn’t there a better way you could have handled this master?” Luxion asked.
“Not really, Oliva just became friends with Angelica, and she’s been keeping the bullies off her back. If I allowed this duel to play out she’d have been dismissed and cast out dooming her to a life of misery.”
“And the wager against the prince?”
“Let me have this, that guy needs a wake up call. That Marie girl is like me, and she’s making things very hard. If I don’t take control of the situation we’ll be having problems.”
“I see…”
-x-
Angelica was worried about him, wanting him to back out of the duel. “No way not happening.”
“You fool, even if you win you’ll face so much wrath, your life will be over.”
“It’s alright, I’m actually really strong.” More than anyone realized. To stay in his mob lane Leon hasn’t shown off, at all.
“Like I’d believe you!” With his scores being only slightly above average going up against the “big five” looked like suicide.
“How rude! I volunteered because I have a chance to win! You were the one started the duel in the first place!”
“I already said I was sorry!” She did indeed apologize for dragging him into this. She knew each of them well, and knew they were no joke. “Their test scores are the highest in the school, if you aren’t careful you could die!”
“Just leave it to me, like you said their scores are the highest in the school, but there is more to life then test scores.”
“What about you raising the bet with the prince?”
“Do you really think he’s gonna honor the bet and stay away from Marie?”
“Of course this is a holy duel and…” Leon stopped her.
“No he won’t he’d make excuses and find some way to still get what he thinks he wants. Julius is confused, he doesn’t realize Marie is just using him. He needs a wake up call and I’m gonna give him one.”
“O-Okay…” She wanted to help the prince and didn’t like Marie so she held no more objections.
-x-
The arena was packed and the big five had their mechs all nice and ready. Leon spotted his friends in the crowd and they had bet on him. ‘Aww guys!’
“Where’s your mech loser?”
“Get lost you hic!”
“Try not to lose too fast we want a show!”
Leon twitched in annoyance. ‘You rotten bastards, you placed your bets so I’m gonna enjoy this!’
He had Luxion call his armor the mighty Arroganz.
It was huge and bulky, and to the eyes of everyone in the arena it was a joke. Even to the big five his armor was a lost item an antique. Since it was an older model it was seen as inferior.
Leon climbed in and was joined by Luxion. Brad was the first to fight, he was in a fancy looking purple mech. ‘Brad a narcissist who is well versed in magic, he’s the weakest of the five but is so prideful he’s the first to step up. This bad habit caused me a lot of trouble in game.’
“Looks like you didn’t run from our duel, I’ll give you props for that.” he flipped his hair. “But do you think you can defeat me with that outdated machine?”
Leon wanted to groan. Had Brad waited he could have analyzed the opponent’s tactics and figured out how best to use his magic to win. Having him fight first is plainly idiotic. As it happened it was Marie who picked the order. “After I defeat you I demand an apology to myself and Marie!”
Brad was bragging about his mech and it just made Leon sigh. “You ever think bragging to your enemy is just giving away all your secrets?” He tensed.
“Shall we prepare to go all out as well?” Luxion asked.
“Not quite, but I have a strategy.” He had a minor hiccup as the last weapon he used with this mech was a shovel he was using to work on his island. “Why didn’t you switch it out!?”
“But it was you wise master who assigned the weapon slot.” The crowd laughed at his use of a shovel even Jilk called it shameful.
“You did this on purpose...ugh fine I can make this work.” Julius was observing the fight more intensely than the others.
“You intend to fight me with a shovel, you must be crazy?”
“I wouldn’t brag so much, it’s gonna make you look worse when you lose.”
“You are infuriating!”
“I’m just calling it as I see it, it’s a shame to see you waste your talents.”
“You continue to mock me?”
“You don’t realize it yet, but you have a lot of potential but you’re wasting it playing kissy kissy in the library instead of studying!” Brad blushed.
“You...you…” The match began and Brad charged in, he used magic to control the lances on his back but Leon’s mech easily side steps them.
“What were you thinking charging in fool!” He hit Brad’s mech and he was down for the count. ‘Oops I may have hit too hard.’
“Had you attacked with all your strength you would have killed him. Magic powered armor is interesting, but lacks balancing, also the pilot lacked focus and his proficiency with a lance was decent but that’s all that was noteworthy about him.” Leon sensed that Luxion took some joy from crushing Brad for insulting Arroganz.
The crowd was stunned into silence as Brad was taken out of the arena. Greg was up next. “Don’t get so cocky Bartfort, Brad was a weakling, I’ll bring you down!”
Cheers for Greg could be heard but they were shallow. The same cheers for Brad could be heard before, but after he lost they were calling him weak. Many in the crowd had bet their entire fortune on this fight. Sometimes a sure thing is too good to be true...
Luxion scanned his armor and found it was much more “battle hardened” and wasn’t as pristine compared to Brad’s. “He’s got experience fighting in armor.” Luxion analyzed.
“Yeah, he’s strong...but…”
“Bartfort, you didn’t beat Brad because you are strong, it’s because your Armor is strong!” Leon sighed.
‘This idiot!’ He ran his hand through his hair. “Well you aren’t exactly wrong, but if you wanted to chat, could you just invite me to a tea party sometime?” Greg blushed.
“You...I...I’m gonna crush you!” Doki Doki
‘Brad is seen as the meathead of the group so he doesn’t do the tea party thing and gets flustered around the subject.’ Leon smiled. “How about this after summer break I’ll host a special tea just for you!”
“I’ll remember your name Bartfort, but you are done pissing me off. I’m gonna destroy you!”
The fight began and the two clashed. Spear versus shovel. ‘Greg...you are strong, and you know it! Your pride is just a royal pain, you rarely use any good equipment and that gets your ass handed to you in game!’
‘My muscles are all the equipment I need!’ Was his line in the game, he was fine with taking whatever, no matter how old or outdated the model was he’d use it to… “prove his strength”.
“No matter how skilled or determined you are if you don’t use the right tools you’re wasting your strength!”
“Huh what the hell are you talking about?” Leon was trying to teach him a lesson, but he was thick headed.
“You are using an outdated mass produced model, are you kidding me!” He began to wail on Greg. Leon broke his spear and knocked him flat on his armored ass.
‘How is he so strong?’
“Shed that nonsensical pride of yours before it gets you killed!” Leon pinned him down and ripped off his mechs arms and legs.
“You bastard you think it’s funny yo mess with me?! What kind of man are you?!” His mech was ripped apart. “You’re only winning because of that armor!”
“You think so?” Leon crossed his arms. “Let me tell you the kind of man I am, I’m a man who’s been training for the last 10 years, who challenged a dungeon and cleared it on my own, and I still strive to grow stronger.” He was preparing for the worst case scenario after all, if the war route happens they were seriously fucked.
“And here you are treating this like a game. You chose to fight using outdated armor, and you wanna blame your loss on me? Don’t you know? Preparation is half the battle!”
“Damn it!”
“You should be ashamed of yourself, but it must be nice to have excuses like “I lost because of that armor!” if this was a real fight and I wanted to kill you your life would be in my hands!” He ripped off the chest plate and exposed the cockpit. Greg was clearly pissed.
He got out of the mech and still tried to fight. Leon was done with this, calling him out for being a bully and a jerk. Greg wasn’t aware of his actions which just made it sadder. He attacked the mech but couldn’t do anything to it. It was like a fly attacking an elephant.
Leon had no intention of “bullying the weak” so called for the refs.
“Get this through your head Greg, you lost because of your pride and your own weakness. You were so eager to fight but didn’t prepare, your life could have ended today, so stop making excuses!” He snapped.
The match was called and Greg left to go lick his wounds. ‘It’s not true is it, have we been bullying the weak?’ He wanted to deny it but his pride had taken a heavy blow this day. As he was escorted out of the stadium he heard the crowd talking about him.
“He was so insistent on fighting but that’s all he’s got?”
“Was he always this weak?”
“I had high hopes too...I have no interest in weak men.”
The girls were more brutal than the guys in their comments.
Next was Chris, wearing light blue armor and wielding a large sword. ‘Oh Chris, the cool and young swordsman of the group. He rarely expresses emotion so it was hard to raise his affection level in the game, and since he only would use swords he had virtually no ranged attacks.’ He was a total pain to get his route to 100%.
“I won’t lose like the other two, I’ll fight with my full strength from the start!”
“Oh? Then I’ll start taking this seriously too!” Leon said in a chipper tone.
“You better not be lying, I’ll show you no mercy!”
“Oh I promise!” In the game the protag gained affection from Chris by listening to his problems.
“She saved me by listening to my problems. This is why I wish to protect her.” He had a lot of issues and was dealing with an inferiority complex longer than his sword.
The match began and Leon unleashed drones on Chris, pelting him with lasers. “Bartford...you...bastard…”
“Is that all you have to say? You wanted me to go all out didn’t you?” A duel was a duel, and there was no rules against drones, projectiles, or long ranged weapons. Considering Jilk also used guns it was a bit silly to complain about it.
“You are messing with me just as you messed with Brad and Greg! I’ll make you pay!” He charged through the laser blasts. “I’ll show you!”
Chris charged in and Leon broke his sword with his mech. “How can this be...how did I lose...I worked harder than anyone else...I was more diligent than anyone else...I wanted to be acknowledged…”
“Your problem is, you let this drama weigh you down. Not that I can blame you, you let that poser girlfriend of yours play you like a fiddle. Venting your problems and getting them off your chest is important but unless you move on you just lay there in Marie’s lap while she plays you the world’s smallest violin!” He may have been harsh but he had a point.
Chris had issues, he needed to talk about them and then move past them, doing the former without the latter just created an unnecessary cycle, rinse and repeat, and doing neither was far worse. Keeping stuff bottled up only brings problems. H may not have realized it but Leon did acknowledge him and fought him as hard as he could without killing him.
Jilk was a bigger problem than the others, he took it upon himself to stop Leon from getting to the prince. He even got Jenna in on this and they planted magic bombs on Arroganz, not that they were effective in the slightest.
The green haired royal even tried to threaten Leon’s family if he didn’t lose. Luxion recorded the whole thing and Leon was able to put Jilk in his place. The fact he was caught attempting to cheat in a sacred duel, threaten the opponents family in a sacred duel, he was in serious trouble.
“You did this all for Julius, no your precious prince, you treated him like so many others. He’s his own man who’s made his decisions. If you cared about his happiness you wouldn’t sneak around and do what you did.”
“That’s not…”
“I’ve heard enough from you...just die already!” He struck Jilk down. Out of the four Jilk was the most troublesome. He acted like a coward and fell like one.
“My prince...you can’t fight him...he’s...too strong…” He said before passing out.
-x-
Marie was sweating bullets. ‘You are all useless!’
Julius had the fanciest looking armor but frankly it was all cosmetic. He was strong but Arroganz was too strong for him. His bold declarations of love for Marie was just annoying Leon. The guy was falling for her nonsense, and Angelica’s the bad guy here?
The prince was so sure Marie was perfect, but Leon knew better. He claimed Angelica only cared about him because he was the prince and didn’t know how he really felt. “Did you ever talk to her?”
“Huh?”
“Did you ever tell her any of this before now, she was your fiancee but you didn’t confide in her, you didn’t trust her, and yet you wanna judge her because she couldn’t read your mind!?” When it was laid out like that the prince was acting quite selfish.
He was dismissing her feelings as if they weren’t real but he was hurting her. “Look at her prince!” He did and Angelica was crying. Meanwhile Marie was just getting angry that her meal ticket was losing. “Even now she cares about you.”
“She doesn’t!”
“Open your eyes man, you claim you don’t want to be seen as the prince but you flaunt the power.” He had bought Marie the elf boy servant, bought her fancy clothes, and enforced his status over her. “You do all this for Marie, but ask yourself what does she do for you?”
“She...she...she makes me happy!”
“That’s nice, but how?” Julius didn’t know how to answer that. “Dude I almost feel sorry for you, you’ve been sheltered from the pains of this world, so its easy for you to fall for someone as shallow as her.”
“You don’t know her?!”
“I do, I’ve seen her type before, she’s playing you. You claim you don’t want your title, your power, your lonely throne, but does Marie share that belief?”
“She’s our goddess!” He lashed out. “For her sake I will not fail!”
“Yes you will, you need a reality check. You have no idea how hard it is for guys without a high title to live.”
“What are you talking about!?”
“If I didn’t clear that dungeon I was gonna be bought and sold to some horny old hag who couldn’t wait for me to die so she could collect a check.”
“What?” Julius was surprised.
“Do you ever put your heart and soul into a tea party only to have some girls trash it, ruin it, and insult you as if you are nothing but filler.” Julius just paid for everything to be done.
“Do you ever get beaten up just for wanting to have a conversation with some girls, because in their eyes you are beneath them!” Some guys in the crowd began to tear up, knowing exactly how that felt. Leon meant platonically, but he was on a roll.
“You rip on Angelica, but your boys treat you as the prince all the same and you don’t call them out on it. Do you hate your title when its convenient for you?” Jilk proved his determination to protect “the prince” by any means necessary.
Julius didn’t have a response to that either. “Shut up, why do you mock me, you act so arrogant because of that mech, do you enjoy looking down on us, taunting us, what is your game?”
“It must suck huh, losing to someone you thought was so beneath you. Frankly you guys are falling over yourselves to get with Marie so fast you don’t realize the problem. You’ve been on a pedestal looking down on everyone for so long you didn’t realize someone stronger than you might be nearby!” This wasn’t a game, there was no restart screens in this world, if these idiots died they’d be gone forever. “If I was the scum you say I am, what could you do to stop me? You idiots are like all the rest so busy looking down at everyone you don’t realize their worth. You won’t wake up unless someone smashes you in the face!” Not just him but Olivia as well, she’s the future saint but she could have done so much more if people listened to her, but no...she’s a commoner...blah blah blah…
Leon was trying to get through to them, but he’d have his work cut out for him.
“I don’t want my Baron title either, I can only imagine what kind of pressure your title brings, but the difference between you and me, if I’m stuck with this title I’m gonna make the most of it.” He began pushing Julius back. “With all the power you have you could make some real changes and make the world a better place, but instead you have everything handed to you so you don’t have a grasp on the power you hold.” He was the future king, if he stayed with Marie, the kingdom was doomed.
“I don’t want it, my empty power or my lonely throne, all I need is Marie!” Leon face palmed.
‘She’s got him totally twisted.’ At least in the games Oliva was seeking the betterment of the kingdom and helps guide Julius to become a wise and honorable king. Marie had him so “in love” he would die for her, and that’s just crazy.
“Fight me Bartfort, I won’t except anything but death as a loss.” What a guy, for someone who doesn’t like their title, they sure were having it as a shield. If Leon killed Julius his death would be certain.
Leon rightfully called him out on this, and Julius went mad. “Know this, I’m defeating Julius Rapha Holfort the man, not the prince. I don’t give a damn about your royal title, to me your are just a jerk who made a lady cry and that’s all I need to teach you a lesson.”
“Bartfort you…” Doki Doki
“You lose…” Luxion readied their trump card. “Impact!”
Boom!
Julius’s mech was reduced to pieces and he was knocked out. The match was over and Leon won. The results of the bets were clear.
He wasn’t the bad guy they wanted but he was the bad guy they needed. His efforts were to make them grow and survive. ‘Like hell I’m gonna let these idiots bring about the bad ends!’
Leon made an appeal to Angelica’s dad to protect his family and his life for the whole mess. He agreed since Leon had defended her honor. Angelica even got to stay with him for the summer to clear her head.
The big five were stripped of their ranks, just as Marie feared. ‘These morons, now they are just a bunch of broke pretty boys!’ Julius would have said his goodbye personally but Leon made sure that didn’t happen, so he left a letter with Jilk.
-x-
Leon had collected Julius, as per their agreement he would be staying with Leon for the summer as his...pet. “Well Julius you’ll be my good little pet won’t you!” The prince blushed.
“You…” He had made the bet and lost, going back on this would shame the royal family. His mother and father already didn’t approve of his recent relationship with Marie, he’d lost his title and position just as he always wanted. “Ugh fine what would you have me do...master…” He spat with annoyance.
“Well first...strip!” Julius’s eyes widened.
“Ehh?” Julius was in for a whole new experience that was gonna awaken sides to him he didn’t know were there.
To be continued...Prince Punishment
