Chapter 3 

Chapter 4 Champions of Red

Crowler was pissed, the Test War was set up. He needed to find five duelists to crush these “slackers”. The paperwork called for a Five versus Five. ‘Damn these upstarts I won’t allow them to have their way.’ They only needed to win three out of the five duels or defeat their leader, but Crowler wanted a sweep. If one side won the majority and defeated the leader they would gain more out of the war. If one side got the majority but the other side took out the leader the war would be deemed a draw. If both leaders were taken out, the majority rule won out.

It wasn’t easy to win a test war, but that was Seto Kaiba for you. That also wasn’t stopping Crowler from stacking the deck so to speak. First thing he did was buy all the new rare cards from the card shop, along with some of the new deck boxes. Next he got his line up.

Chazz, Raizou, and Taiyou were in, finding this challenge to be an insult. Crowler gave them the majority of rare cards to super charge their decks. A boy named Torrey was roped in, he was one of the Obelisk Blue students and while he didn’t have any issue with the Red Dorm he was terrified of Doctor Crowler.

As for the last soldier in the war, he had limits, but he managed to bribe Jasmine to enter the war for Obelisk Blue. Alexis couldn’t believe it. “How could you do a favor for Crowler?”

“It’s not that big of a favor, I just gotta crush some Slifer losers and I got some sweet cards out of the deal.” Jasmine said.

“Really…” Alexis shook her head.

“Come on Alexis, those Slifer students started this by declaring war, what’s wrong with defending the home team?”

“Crowler’s a snob, he showed his true colors in the entrance exam. Just because we are Obelisk Blue doesn’t mean we have to agree with him or follow what he says.” Jasmine didn’t get it. Crowler promised her a lot so she lost.

“I hope my opponent is hot!” Alexis just sighed. She understood why Chazz, Raizou, and Taiyou, were doing this, they bought into the system Crowler was selling them. They didn’t want the Red Dorm becoming better because in their twisted minds if the dorms were equal that makes them less special. She knew Torrey was having troubles in class, and he was scared of Crowler so that’s how he got dragged into all this.

She liked being in Obelisk Blue, she was just tired of all the snobs and jerks. If the Slifer Dorm got some upgrades it didn’t bother her.

Everyone was talking about the Test War, excited to see the matches. Crowler didn’t waste time, he adjusted the brackets.

Jaden was up against Chazz!

Chumley was put up against Taiyou and his Dragon Deck!

Blaze was up against Raizou and his Impregnable Fortress Deck!

Syrus was up against Jasmine and her Female Warrior Deck!

Thunder was up against Torrey and his Gravekeeper Deck.

He had given Chazz a full deck of rare cards, while the others got some powerful and special cards that’d boost their decks. Torrey’s deck was replaced by the Gravekeeper Deck from a box. It worked for him as he thought Gravekeeper’s were cool.

‘Heehee, my Obelisk Blue students with their superior skills and decks super charged with rare cards!’ He was so giddy. ‘Those Slifer Slackers are going down!’

Little did Crowler realize the Slifer students had Jaden, who was making their own preparations. While Crowler could arrange the brackets he had no control of the order of the matches. While seemingly insignificant it could be a morale booster if victories began to show first hand.

After the written tests were given out everyone met at the Duel Arena. The Obelisk Blue students were hoping to witness a total shut out. The Ra Yellow students were just hoping the duels lasted long enough to study and learn new tactics. As for the Slifer students well…

Bastion took his seat in the audience. “What could Jaden be thinking? He might be a good duelist but I saw the others at the entrance exam their skills were pathetic and Chumley has been held back two years.” He muttered.

“Can’t plan the outcome of battle on old data.” Bastion jumped as Hassleberry took a seat next to him.

“Hello Tyranno, are you saying Jaden’s helped them improve?” Hassleberry chuckled.

“Sure am, it’s why I put in my request to be moved to the Slifer Barracks.”

“You what?!” It was a shock as Tyranno went nuts about getting into Obelisk Blue when he arrived, and had been trying to get into it since. “What brought this on?”

“Jaden...he showed me my priorities were all off. Things are changing and I know what side I’m going to stand on!” Bastion wasn’t sure.

Give it to Kaiba, he loved his dragons, the round rotation was decided by a dragon shaped gacha machine. “First round will be Blaze Verses Raizou!”

“You better not lose!” Chazz told him.

“No worries Chazz, no one got past my defenses and that was before Crowler gave me those new cards!” They took to the field. A coin toss decided who’s go first and Raizou was the lucky winner.

“Duel!”

Blaze/Raizou: 4000

“I summon Gamma the Magnet Warrior!” The magnet monster appeared on the field. “Next I activate Double Summon, to tribute my warrior and summon Labyrinth Wall in Defense Mode!”

Walls appeared around his side of the field. Wall 3000 DEF!

“My move, it’s time to turn up the heat!” He activated Molten Destruction! The field turned hot as a Volcano appeared behind Blaze. “Next I summon the Raging Flame Sprite!”

“Hahaha you call that a monster what’s that Pipsqueak gonna do?” Raizou laughed. Those in the audience who didn’t know laughed as the pixie looking monster didn’t look threatening.

ATK 100 DEF 200

Blaze blushed. He didn’t like being laughed at. ‘Remember...deep breaths...shut them up with your dueling!’ He used the breathing technique Jaden taught him and got his game on. “With my field spell my Sprite’s attack increases by 500!” The downside being he loses 400 DEF.

Raging Flame Sprite: 600 ATK

“Now my Sprite attacks!”

“Are you blind, my Labyrinth Wall has 3000 DEF!”

“Too bad for you, my Sprite can attack you directly!” The sprite flew through the labyrinth and found Raizou at the center.

“What?!” With a smirk the sprite hit him with his staff and set him ablaze. “Ah ah ah ah!” He patted himself down on reflex.

Raizou: 3400

“Now my Sprite’s effect activates boosting his ATK by 1000.”

Sprite: 1600

“I’ll set a card face down and end my turn!”

Raizou draws. “I summon Alpha the Magnet Warrior!” It had 1700 ATK. “Next I equip him with United We Stand, since I have two monsters on the field my magnet warrior gains 1600 ATK!”

Alpha: 3300 ATK

“That’s a serious spell!” Bastion gasped.

“Say goodbye to your Sprite!”

“I don’t think so!” His face down was flipped. “Gravity Bind!” Waves rippled out, and it made it so Alpha wasn’t able to attack.

“What?!” Raizou gasped. His combo being undone, his rare card being made useless. The plan was to build up his defenses then give one of his high attackers united we stand to make it an unstoppable hitter. With a monster that can attack directly he had to speed up his plan.

He ended his turn.

Blaze draws. “I’ll equip my Sprite with Burning Spear!” His staff turned into a flaming spear.

Sprite: 2000

He flew and hit Raizou, his life points dropping to 1300 and while his points dropped Sprite’s ATK increased by another 1000.

Sprite 3000

Raizou draws but he had noting to get rid of the trap card, so the match was over.

“The first battle is for the Slifer Team!” Shepard declared.

The Obelisk Blue students were shocked at the flawless victory. “He...he just got lucky…” Luck was a factor in any game, but Blaze had other options in his hand.

“Nice job bro!” Thunder gave him a high five. Clap!

“You know it, good luck in your match too!” Blaze was excited, with this victory he was sure he was getting a reward from Jaden.

The Gacha was started up and the next match was Thunder and Torrey. “Looks like it’s my time to shine!”

Torrey won the coin toss so he was going first. “I summon Gravekeeper Nobleman in Defense Mode!” He set a card face down and ended his turn.

“My move!” He draws. Thunder got some upgrades to his deck, Jaden convinced him to using Watt monsters. “I summon Wattcobra!” The thunder snake appeared on the field. “Next I equip him with the Horn of the Unicorn!”

A magic horn grew on the cobra’s head, raising his attack.

Wattcobra: 1700

He was able to bypass Torrey’s monster and attack him directly.

Torrey: 2300

“Now my monster’s effect activates allowing me to add a Watt monster to my hand.” He added Wattwoodpecker to his hand. “I’ll set one card on the field and end my turn.

‘This is bad, if that monster keeps attacking directly I’ll lose like Raizou.’ He draws. “Mmm...okay I use Polymerization!”

He fused a gravekeeper in his hand with Nobleman. “I special summon Gravekeeper’s Supernaturalist!”

“You activated my trap!” Wattcancel, since Torrey special summoned a monster this counter trap activated. Thunder discarded Wattwoodpecker and his fusion monster was destroyed. Supernaturalist got zapped and was destroyed.

“I...I...umm I set a monster face down, and I’ll play a face down and end my turn.” He had magic cylinder set, hoping to reflect 1700 damage back at Thunder.

He draws. “I summon Wattgiraffe!” He could also attack directly. “Go Wattgiraffe attack him directly.”

“You idiot stop him!” Chazz screamed.

It was too late, the giraffe hit and his effect activated.

Torrey: 1100

“Wattcobra attack!”

“I activate my trap Magic Cylinder!” The trap was paralyzed. “Huh?”

“When Wattgiraffe inflicts battle damage, he stuns your card effects.” Torrey didn’t know. So his loss came quick.

“Aaahhh!” He got zapped.

Torrey: 0

“Slifer wins another battle!” Shepard declared. Crowler was chewing on his sleeve.

‘How is this possible?’ Not only was it a victory but a flawless victory.

Next battle was Syrus vs Jasmine!

Zane was about to leave. “You aren’t gonna watch your brother duel?”

“There is no point, he doesn’t belong here.”

“At least watch his match, he may surprise you.” Alexis said. Zane sighed and sat down.

Syrus was a little nervous, but Jaden gave him a thumbs up. “I can do this!” His brother Zane wasn’t the best influence, always putting him down. He treated Syrus like an idiot which hurt his confidence. Jaden’s been building it up.

‘I just gotta crush this wimp, too easy!’ She thought.

The coin was tossed and Syrus got first go. “I’ll summon Gyroid in Defense Mode!” He put a card face down and ended his turn.

Gyroid: 1000 DEF

“You call that a move.” Jasmine draws. “Say so long to your little toy!” She summoned Amazoness Swordswoman! With 1500 ATK it was quite strong, but her effect made her more dangerous. “Attack!”

The Amazoness attacked, but to Jasmine’s shock Gyroid stood standing. “What?!”

“Once per battle phase Gyroid can survive being destroyed!” He explained.

“Ugh how annoying!” She ended her turn.

Syrus draws. “I summon Submarineroid!” His little submarine monster can attack directly with it’s original ATK and then switch to defense mode.

It blasted Jasmine and switched to defense mode.

Jasmine 3200

He ended his turn.

Jasmine draws. “I summon Command Knight!” The female warrior appeared on the field with 1200 ATK. Her effect activated boosting the ATK of all warriors.

Swordswoman: 1900
Knight: 1600

Jasmine had the two warriors attack Gyroid destroying him. She had a Poly and another Amazon in her hand, if she draws the right card she believed Syrus was toast.

Syrus draws. “I summon Truckroid in Defense Mode!”

The massive truck monster was rocking 2000 DEF.

Submarineroid attacked her before switching back into defense.

Jasmine: 2400

He ended his turn. Jasmine draws. “I activate Pot of Greed!” She got two more cards. “I activate Polymerization, and I fuse  Amazoness Queen and Amazoness Brawler to fusion summon Amazoness Empress!” She called out the powerful warrior. She got a boost from Command Knight.

Empress: 3200

“Next I equip my Amazoness Swordswoman United We Stand.” It boosted her up for the three monsters on the field.

Sworswoman: 4300

“Guess what little man, now with my Empress on the field my Amazoness monsters inflict piercing damage!”

“Oh no!” Syrus groaned.

Swordswoman attacked Submarineroid.

Syrus: 1500

He got hit with piercing damage. “Gah!”

“See, he doesn’t know how to play his cards.” Zane said.

“I don’t think so, I think Jasmine screwed up.”

“Now Empress attack his monster!”

‘You got her Syrus!’ Jaden thought with a smirk.

She was so sure of victory she didn’t realize or forgot about Syrus’s face down. Since he didn’t activate it she figured it was a bluff, but no. The trap activated Magic Cylinder! Truesdale waited for the right time to play it!

Her Amazon’s attack was turned back on her hitting her with 3200 points of damage. Her new boss monster was used against her.

“Slifer wins this round!” While not a flawless victory a win was a win.

“See, he did great.” Zane shook his head.

“His opponent just lacked the skills. He still doesn’t deserve to be here.” Alexis sighed.

“Look at him, and listen to them cheer!” Slifer students were cheering them on. They got the three wins so unless Jaden loses the test war was theirs.

The next match was Chumley versus Taiyou. While it might seem pointless Taiyou had a lot to prove as they knew about Chumley’s dueling skill, or lack there of. If he lost he’d be in big trouble.

Now Taiyou’s deck strategy was to use Lord of Dragons and Flute of Summoning Dragons to special summon powerful dragons onto the field. Thanks to Crowler he got some new powerful dragons which got added to his deck. The rare cards weren’t balanced with the older ones. His first hand contained Curse of Dragon, Nightmare Dragon, Ryu-Ran, Luster Dragon # 2,  and Koumori Dragon.

Chumley got to go first. He set a card face down and ended his turn.

Taiyou draws. He got Lord of Dragons! ‘Alright I just need to get the flute and Chumley is toast.’

He summoned Koumori Dragon and had it attack his face down. Des Koala! The beast smacked the dragon away he had 1800 DEF so Taiyou took 300 damage.

Taiyou: 3700

“Since my Des Koala was flipped face up his effect activates. Since you have 5 cards in your hand you take 400 points for each of them.”

“Oh man!” Koala dished out a storm of leaves.

Taiyou: 1700

“Ugh I end my turn!”

Chumley draws. “I set 1 monster face down and set a card face down.” He ended his turn.

Taiyou draws. “Yes!” He got the flute! “I summon Lord of Dragons!”

“I activate my face down, Book of Moon!” And just like that Taiyou was screwed. Lord of Dragons was flipped face down so he couldn’t use his flute, his hand was full and if that face down was another Des Koala it was over.

He ended his turn and it was a Des Koala, Chumley got him for burn damage and victory was his. The Slifer students in the crowd was cheering, the other dorms couldn’t believe it.

These guys had the lowest scores, had poor performance in exams, and now they crushed four Obelisk Blue students. Taiyou got a bad hand sure, which happened but the tactics employed was impressive. Their improvement and confidence was shocking.

Those considered to be the weakest of the slackers just set the stage becoming the champs of Slifer!

Now it was just down to Jaden to claim victory!
