Chapter 3 Swarm Trouble

At lunch Pikachu shared the secret about his and Ash’s relationship. His ability to read their hearts and feelings was certainly unique. The special attachment he had certainly sparked some curiosity.

Ash was a little miffed at how far ahead Gary was already, but they were different trainers. He did want to catch more Pokemon. There was a lot to do but he didn’t need to rush. No matter how far ahead Gary got, they’d still be meeting at the League at the same time.

“Help, help me!” He cried.

“Leave him alone!” Ash jumped in.

“Ash!?” He gasped.

“Pikachu, Pidgey…” Their auras flared. “Thundershock, Gust!” He called for their master moves, normally such moves could only strike one opponent. Since they were mastered, the moves could be used in unique ways.

Pikachu shocked a bunch of the Spearow, while Pidgey’s mighty Gust hit a good number of them. “Poliwag use Water Gun!” Poliwag aided, knocking them out one at a time with his attack. Toren was stunned, he’s never seen moves used like that.

“Are you okay Toren?” Ash’s voice pulled him from his shock.

“My Pokemon need treatment, I was trying to catch that Spearow, but...it called for help and I got overwhelmed by the swarm.” Spearow was an aggressive flying type, this bird monster was known for calling for help. His Bulbasaur, Oddish, and Bellsprout were all knocked out and the Spearow were still attacking.

Rain began to fall as thunder rumbled above.

The leader of the flock glared at Ash. “Spearow, stop this!” He could feel the rage from the Spearow. “The battle is over, call off the swarm!”

Spearow let out a cry of refusal. “If you still wish to fight, I will face you. I won’t let you hurt Toren or his Pokemon!” Ash’s aura flared. He raised a monster ball. “But know when I defeat you, I’ll make you my monster!”

The angry bird monster refused to back down as did the swarm. Some charged at Poliwag thinking he was the weak link. That was a mistake, his aura flared as Water Gun became mastered. He unleashed Water Gun like it was a machine gun, he took out ten of the Spearow like it was nothing.

Toren couldn’t believe it. Swarms were trouble for most trainers, even if you had a full team to stand against them. ‘Has Ash found a way to handle swarms?’

Even in ancient times swarms could be overwhelming, in fact they could be deadly. It was only by mastering moves and forming bonds with pokemon did humans surpass the challenge. In this era the most dangerous “Swarm Pokemon” were Spearow/Fearow, Beedrill, Ekans/Arbok, Mankey, Zubat/Golbat, and Tentacool/Tentacruel. These monsters could call the biggest swarms, any monster could call for help, and it would be troublesome but “Swarm Pokemon” were worse.

Certain monsters could be more territorial so didn’t call for help as often, other monsters like Grimer and Voltorb could be dangerous in small swarms, even Paras could be problematic in large numbers. These swarms were rarer, and happened during outbreaks. So during certain conditions some Pokemon could be classified as “Swarm Pokemon” with high danger threats.

Pidgey took on some of the Spearow and kept them in an aerial battle. Pikachu zapped out another ten Spearow, and when others swooped in to attack him, when they got close he used Double Team to dodge and confuse the Spearow, before using Nuzzle on some, inflicting damage on some and causing paralysis. The ones that were lucky enough to hit Pikachu were inflicted by Pikachu’s Static ability.

Poliwag used his mastered Water Gun, while those that got in close, were put to sleep with his Hypnosis.

Some even attacked Ash trying to get to Toren. Ketchum flared his aura to form a shield. He took the hits but was standing his ground.

The leader Spearow tried to get the swarm to circle them, that would be the end for them. Pidgey didn’t let that happen, he used Gust to knock out more of the swarm. The experience helped him learn a new move, Whirlwind!

Pidgey used this new move to blow away the Spearow one by one.

The swarm was dwindling, the mastered moves being the saving grace. There was a cost to using the moves this way, but with three mons, they managed to stand strong in the face of large numbers. Soon only the leader remained.

Ash could tell by it’s aura that it was the strongest Spearow of the bunch. Poliwag and Pidgey were exhausted but Pikachu agreed to face it.

It was a fierce battle, Pikachu paralyzed it with Nuzzle and hit him with a Quick Attack. Spearow wasn’t backing down. Ketchum tried to catch him twice but he kept escaping the ball. “Quick Attack one more time!” Pikachu hit him hard. “Monster Ball go!”

Jiggle...Jiggle...Jiggle...Ping!

Ash crumpled to ground, breathing a sigh of relief. Pikachu also slumped down. They were all exhausted. “It’s over…”

The Spearow swarm scattered, with their leader gone, some chose to migrate while others chose to remain and try to become the new leader, some new flocks may form. Nature had a way of balancing out.

Ketchum used his aura to treat Toren’s Pokemon, restoring enough of their energy. “Ash you saved me!”

“We got lucky!” He chuckled. “You all did great!” The monsters got in for group hug, even retrieving the ball with Spearow inside.

“Let’s get to the Pokemon Center!” Toren helped Ash up. The aura user was spent and exhausted.

Toren helped Ash up, the skies cleared, and in the sky a glowing pokemon flew. ‘That’s Ho-Oh!’ Ash recognized.

“Oh my!” Toren marveled at the monster. As it flew over head it flapped his wings and two feathers came down. One for Ash and one for Toren. It made Ash smile, he had a feeling the greenette was special.

Ho-Oh was one of the legendary pokemon Arceus created to guide humans and pokemon. It only gives the rainbow feathers to those he believed were worthy. They were not the only trainers who saw Ho-Oh that day, but they received the rainbow feathers.

The two made it through Route 1 together and reached Viridian City. They got to the Pokemon center for a much deserved rest.
