Wings Flies Its Gay Character Back to Nantucket

“Sons and Lovers” (January 16, 1996)

This is an honest-to-God follow-up to our previous Wings episode, which was all about the series antagonist, Roy Biggins, finding out his son was gay. Five seasons later, someone at Wings thought to ask “Hey, what if that gay character didn’t cease to exist the moment that first episode ended?” This episode marks one of the few times that a one-off gay character actually got to return. And yeah, we’re re-joined by Massachusetts correspondent Jonathan Bradley Welch. It’s a real journey for us all.

Farrah Forke actually did pass away earlier this year.

What was the product being advertised?

I’m in Michigan and it has the Secretary of State (SOS). I’m from PA and DE which are both DMV states and it being called the Secretary of State is frustrating to me and I don’t know why. Also PA and DE both say “pocketbook” so I definitely grew up with that as the default word.

There used to be commercials for something called the “Hopper” and the actors all had New England/Boston accents. Not being originally from here I had no idea what the joke was until this episode 🤦🏻‍♀️

Lobo

That is interesting to me because a pocketbook, in this sense, is weirdly neither a book nor something that would go in a pocket, if I'm understanding correctly.

Re purse vs pocketbooks : I grew up in NJ, and my mom always had a pocketbook. Moved to San Francisco at age 23 in 1996, and was roundly mocked the first time I referred to a women's handbag as a "pocketbook." To me, the terms are interchangeable, but the usage is highly regional.
