The Crew Was Fox’s Queer-Inclusive Alternative to Friends

“The Man We Love” (June 30, 1996)

Last week, we looked at Married… With Children’s take on an anti-Friends. This week, we decided to look at the last episode of a show that aired the previous season on Fox. While it was not designed as a response to Friends, it nonetheless managed to solve some of that show’s major problems. Namely, it’s racially diverse, there’s a queer character in the opening credits, and the characters actually work. It’s also funny, and having been co-created by writers who cut their teeth on The Golden Girls, that’s no surprise. What’s more, this show features an explicitly bi character — and this is something sitcoms almost never did and still don’t.

I actually didn't know they were a couple. This is the first I'm hearing of it.

Oh, my God, guys, MY GUYS! While you mention Wendy and Lisa for the show's theme, and kind of lightly skim over the fact that they were in The Revolution, how on earth could you not put huge importance on the fact that they were a lesbian couple?! Just 60 more seconds of their musical background, and the fact that they were "married" for over twenty years! Never mind their playing with and producing for everyone under the sun and doing tv themes and scores left and right! But most importantly (for a gay breakdown podcast) they were . . . (best Tony imitating Blanche Devereaux) LESBIANS!

Vanessa Lopez

Okay actually no, I don't think so? We had wanted to do the alien episode and then someone else gave a vivid description of the adult baby episode. What episode were you suggesting?

Drew Mackie

*gasp!* Was that comment about me?! The Perfect Strangers episode I suggested?! The one that I think about ALL THE TIME and scared the hell out of me as a kid?!

Lea Susan Engle

Dang! I missed out on so much by not having FOX until fall 1998 season.

Benjamin Rippel

I was surprised as anyone that we got to cover it!

Drew Mackie

Seeing this episode title in the feed made me unreasonably excited, especially since I had no idea this series even existed before that off-hand (off-handed?) mention in the last episode.

Erin Hardy

Right? Like… it could have been a radio hit.

Drew Mackie

Ok that theme is good

Ryan Zepp

I do really like this idea, honestly, but we've got two bonus series to get through first
