Sewers of Paris: Secrets Do Not Serve Me (Ep 507: Shane/Wayne Scott)

My guest on this week's Sewers of Paris podcast is author and psychotherapist Wayne Scott. His new book, The Maps They Gave Us, is a memoir about navigating a rocky period in a marriage, about narrowly dodging divorce through non-monogamy, and about rediscovering his relationship with the queer community with support from his wife. It’s a complex journey, with surprising parallels to a cowboy story that was a point of obsession and mystery in his youth.

I loved episode too! Thanks Matt! Shane is quite an interesting film and yes, Shane rides into the lives of this farm family and captivates the son, played by Brandon deWilde and the wife, the wonderful Jean Arthur, and threatens the role of the husband, Van Heflin. Brandon deWilde had a tragically short but very impressive career. As a somewhat odd child, he was in two classic films, Member of the Wedding and Shane. Member of the Wedding being a tale of a sexually ambiguous young girl and the queerness oozes from this film. Later, deWilde grew into a beautiful young man and was in the film HUD, where he played the younger brother to the wild and sexy Paul Newman. Another film, All Fall Down, deWilde again plays the younger brother to the wild and sexy Warren Beatty. Sadly, deWilde’s life was ended in a traffic accident when he was thirty years old. As Wayne Scott mentions, the ending scene of Shane is where the boy hauntingly calls out for Shane to return. Really great!
