I think me and Alex both saw school as a chore rather than a place for self-improvement or anything like that. I'm sure there's good intentions behind it and it'll work for some students, but I never felt even the slightest investment in any of my school work and there's there's certainly no way I would've invested time in evaluating the busywork other students were doing, you know? Though I'm sure teachers are dismayed by that attitude haha

Obviously it doesn't matter for the grade but criticism can be helpful in the long run. Some of my students also feel like they should just be positive to each other but I wish they'd realise that it's more about mutual improvement rather than just grading each other for no reason. anyway you should get autocritic to grade your songs so the feedback can help you improve!!

2023-06-27 16:56:47 +0000 UTCill take a minor amount of umbrage that Fantano is our generation's Klosterman...i avoided Fantano for years, mostly cause i thought he has just a bog standard r/hiphopheads guy, but i've come to find that he's actually a very thoughtful critic and has a pretty level head when it comes to the cultural talking point of the moment. what separates him from the klostermans/bill simmons of the world is he's constantly reassessing his opinions on albums from 5-10 years ago and he will admit if he was too harsh or too lauding about them. he also has a great bit where if someone recognizes him on the street, he will ask them what reviews they think he got wrong and he will just let them air him out with no defensiveness at all...if you cornered klosterman or simmons in a public forum and said "this thing you think is such an important cultural touchstone was not as good as you thought it was and has had no lasting impace on the current cultural mileau", they would stat talking like a JRPG villain and there would be an op-ed in some publication somewhere called "Have We Lost Touch With Our Past? :("
