I do kind of like that weird soft vibrato that tenors used to have. Soft palates were even softer back then.

In defense of Fred he was goated as a dancer not as singer... there is even a bit in one of his movies with Bing Crosby where Fred admits he sucks at singing and Bing admits he sucks at dancing. (And yes, the movie does have a gratuitous "evade detection through blackface" scene.) I think movie stars back then must have released albums since people couldn't buy the VHS of the movie but you could cash in a little on record sales no matter how bad you sucked. Even Leonard Nimoy had like five albums in the 60s. Wonder what did better back in the day, movie sales or soundtrack sales.
