Tutorial: Making Bass with Shaper Table

This month we make some bass sounds with Phaseplant and some of the newest Kilohearts effects. We also make a track using the patch. You can download the project file below to use in anyway you like.

After this and your snare tutorial, I'm stunned and fascinated at just how *different* my technique is from yours. I don't think either approach is better than the other, but when it comes to both basses and snares, I tend to use deliberately-simpler processing chains that very intently preserve phase relationships to keep things sounding huge but a bit harsh and deliberately cartoony. I never use OTT - not even deliberately, but because it screws with the relative phase of your signal's harmonics, and so it never naturally occurs to me that it's what I need. And I finish almost everything off with sausageizing compression, saturation, and clipping so the final product is uniformly saturated one way or another for maximum slap. Meanwhile, you route everything through OTT and vocoders, which screws horribly with the phase of your different layers and yields a less bombastic but much less harsh, better-rounded sound. I was stunned to see how little you leaned on clipping/saturation to finish your snare, whereas spiking the transient into clipping is routine for me when designing drums. You tame the crunch of raw waveforms where I deliberately preserve and exaggerate it. Definitely still learning a lot from this tutorial - right off the bat, you figure out things you can do with Shaper Table that never occurred to me. Fantastic stuff. None of this is criticism; I'm a very happy patron :)

gracias! just got phase plant last month and having a ton of fun with it. shaper table is a blast, and this tutorial really helped me progress my bass design. pro tip: don't be afraid to drive Saturator 26 db 😅
