Had this scene stuck in my head for a while. It should be the first time they have sex, after endless spiteful bickering and taunting by your Celeste truly, which had the desired effect of driving Naoki up a wall, making him break his marriage vows. It's not cute. Hate sex and insults are their love language at first, plus Naoki is... plain nasty and sexually frustrated. Things with his wife haven't been going well since forever, but he was too much of a pious and strict man to consider cheating... until now.

Celeste wouldn't have it any other way. He wants it as rough as Naoki can give it to him – he won't break so easily, after all. And yet, despite every snarky comment aimed at riling Naoki up ("Bet you couldn't fuck your wifey like this, huh?"), Celeste feels comfortable enough to stop him and share his preferences – something he never cared to point out to his previous owners. He knows Naoki would listen. He knows he can trust him, even if Naoki doesn't always trust his own self. Celeste can read him like a book, one he knows by heart.

Wall of text of TRIVIA you can skip but I highly recommend it to fuel the brainrot 🥺

- Celeste’s discomfort with vaginal penetration comes more from his backstory (🤐) rather than from dysphoria (though that obviously plays a part, too). He does like fingering and getting eaten out, and he’s the first one to use AFAB terms to refer to his bits, that’s why Naoki doesn’t hold his tongue in any sense of the term (ba dum tss). He’s extremely respectful of Celeste’s gender identity (if nothing else 💀), and that doesn’t change even when Celeste does everything inhumanly possible to get on his nerves.

- At this point in the story, Celeste still hasn’t even entertained the idea of gender-affirming surgery or hormonal therapy. Both would be nearly experimental on Vampires.

- Celeste is fluent in Japanese. He and Naoki talk the language when they don’t want to be understood by anyone else – especially on the job during investigations. They’re annoying like that.
While Celeste’s Italian (or well, English, since that’s how I’m writing the book) is colloquial, his Japanese sounds way more formal & polite, because he learned it in the past. It gives Naoki whiplash every time he hears it. The good kind. *wiggles eyebrows*

- Celeste often calls Naoki danna, which is a Japanese term formerly used by service people (eg geisha) to refer to their male patrons of higher status/authority. It can translate to ‘sir/master’ but also to ‘husband’ (someone else's or your own), as a legacy of feudal Japan where husbands were supposed to be the masters of the house and also providers to their wives & servants alike. It used to be a deferential word, but in modern Japanese it acquired a fond if not intimate meaning, especially since now it’s also used by hostesses and sex workers in a sort of ‘sugar daddy’ way. Celeste miiight not be aware of this last bit of information. Naoki is. Of course he is, the kinky bastard.
Btw, the first kanji that makes up danna is the one for ‘dawn’ (旦), which is incredibly fitting, once you realize I'm not being subtle at all with the whole endhawks/Icarus and the Sun reference.

- if you're curious about their sexuality, Naoki is pan and Celeste is demi. Naoki, for his part, isn’t aware of this last bit of information. :)))
