Amalar Arc 5 Ep 1: The Pack

"For the strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack." - Rudyard Kipling, author of The Jungle Book and I assume, a wolf

That's right, Arc 5 is an OOPS ALL WOLVES campaign. It's also a prequel!

Join the sweet scout Tuffy (Matt Cordova), the grizzled former alpha, Harland (Izzy Roland), and introspective beta, Grey (Brennan Lee Mulligan) as they hunt for their pack and find much much more than they bargained for!

Listening a bit late but oh my gosh massive props to Zac for the continued compelling storytelling and world-building! I got so emotional when the connection of this arc to the previous arcs was revealed. Keen to listen to more.

Mads

I'm absolutely loving these wolves

Kitty Stryker

Ok, this was a SOLID episode and I'm thrilled to see what this arc is gonna bring.

Thank you all for the wolf corrections! Glad to know the truth behind those terms. We recorded the entire arc over 2 days so this terminology will def still come up throughout the arc, but outside of the scientific inaccuracy I think it's still an extremely compelling arc!

Zac Oyama

Oop, well, I see others have already said the same thing 😅

Zoology major here. Just wanted to “um actually” some wolf facts on you. There’s actually no such thing as alphas and betas in a wolf pack; dominance theory was based on observing unrelated wolves in captivity and not in the wild, and has since been disproven. Wolf packs are usually made up of a breeding pair and their children. So basically the dominant wolves are the mom and dad of the other wolves in the pack. However! When various unrelated wolves are shoved together unnaturally, they will work out a hierarchy that basically consists of deciding which wolf will be the “mom friend” of the group. Of course, these are fantasy wolves so they can go by Rudyard Kipling rules, but I can’t help but share some Wolf Facts.™ Either way, this arc is very intriguing and I can’t wait to see how it ties into everything! And also, getting to see ya’ll play wolves like my sisters and I in middle school playing in the woods is absolutely delightful and nostalgic. Also also, it’s always fun to see Brennan get to play a PC!

Zac your dice rolls have the most satisfying sound. It’s the icing on this treat of an episode.

Love the episode!!!!

This Arc is already putting off big Disney movie energy

Chase Damon

Its definitely Freya, the druid mentioned her goddess and fort Cutler

Chase Damon

Thank you for letting everyone that Brennan was wearing the shirt, Zac!

Not to mansplain on the Patreon... But it's cool, I'm a nerd and I loved this episode! The study that put forth the terms "alphas"and "betas" in wolf packs was done on an "artificial" wolf pack that was created in captivity, meaning a random assortment of unrelated wolves were housed together and sort of forced to figure out a pecking order (to use another out-dated animal analogy). In the wild, wolf "packs" are usually just extended families, usually consisting of a breeding pair and several generations of their child wolves, like a nuclear family. Pack affiliation can also be fluid with unrelated wolves joining and adult wolves leaving. Hyenas and African Wild Dogs also operate in packs similar to the Grey Wolf. Like dogs, wolves' disposition, such as aggressive vs. docile, is probably a more realistic understanding of inter-pack dynamics. It has been documented that wolves very, very rarely fight or "challenge" each other for "dominance" the way that many hooved ruminant mammals (like moose, elk and deer) will fight to breed with females. That said, female wolves will split off from their packs to find non-blood mates, they have been tracked traveling hundreds of miles to find their new hubbies! The wolf packs of Yellowstone National Park, where Grey wolves from Canada were reintroduced (after being exterminated by the US government) to the ecosystem about 30 years ago, are some of the best studied and tracked wolves on the planet! A lot of amazing discoveries came from following how wolves interacted and impacted that ecosystem. Anyway that's all for today's #WolfFacts 🐺

So excited for this arc!

Here to ask if the idea for casting OOPS ALL WOLVES! was in any way inspired by the prescient and hard-hitting analysis of furry culture during the Arc 3 finale?

farmerjoe_y

…Much more than they barkgained for, indeed! Awesome ep and arc so far.

thedragonllama

To start they had wolf statblocks & added one level of health (hit die plus con) and gave them each two proficiencies

Zac Oyama

Did we just see a little baby Freya?? My hypothesis is this is some historical lore building in action!

Mr. Satan, the World Martial Arts Champion and the Earth's protector

Still just in the intro part, but am I the only one assigning Balto characters as the visuals for the wolves?

Noah Jay

That was fantastic. Tonally a little less goofy, which can be nervewracking for both regular play -and- putting on a show for an audience, but you guys totally pulled it off. Fascinated to hear the ramifications of that ending in the next episode! Also, the branding for this show is very canid-based for literally no reason, and I love it.

Quitebadweather

Rules as written, awakened just increases intelligence from less than 3 to 10, and gives them an extra language to speak - but y'all were making investigation checks (int) and int saves, and it didn't sound like you were making those rolls with a -4 to the result. So, I hope they get some extra abilities to compensate.

Nathan Wilson

Fantastic Ep! Just wondering as a crunchy guy, did y'all just use wolf statblocks, or did you make customized character sheets for everyone? (You don't have to tell me if it would be a spoiler 👀)

Ted Orbach

Great episode! Very excited to find out what being awakened will mean in this context.

Nathan Wilson

Since so-called Alphas in wolf packs are just the parents of the other wolves, did Harland go on Wolf Jerry Springer and find out he's not the father?

Donny

ohhhhhhh

Zac Oyama

Yes i only like it when talking about actual wolves!

Zac Oyama

Y'know with it being Izzy and Brennan I will support the perpetuation of "alphas" and "betas" lol

1man2hands

Tuffy is my dog's name. I'm so excited

Stephanie Neher

It's common knowledge Rudyard Kipling was a mongoose.
