On writing. (Dev Diary)

Welcome all to another dev diary - where I break down a scene to discuss more about the process behind it.

Some of you might recognize the image from a previous update - I'll like to take the chance while this is fresh in my mind to talk a little more about our writing process.

Hopefully everyone's had a chance to play the latest release as I'll be referencing one of the scenes in here! (minor spoiler alert)

Scene Treatment

Scene - Police Station
#Travel to police station
#Desk sergeant is really off-handed about the whole situation
#Throws form on a stack of paper work and tells MC to leave
#You don't look convinced but leave anyway

Scene Dialogue

#Fade in
"The harsh hum of the vehicle kept us company as we sat through the trip in silence."
"Diane spent the entire journey looking out the window, barely registering my presence."
"An occasional lip purse betrays her thoughts, hinting at an inner turmoil not unlike my own.."
"..."
"We're here."
#Fade to black
"The dingy interior is a marked departure from the outside."
"A few steps into the paper strewn station, and the musty air caked with cigarette smoke and coffee immediately assail our senses."
"We purposefully make our way to the main desk, avoiding the debris strewn about carelessly."
"A rotund figure in uniform slums over the front desk, I can't tell if he's asleep or engrossed with work."
"*Ahem*."
"No response."
"I stomped loudly towards the desk, hoping my footsteps will alert him to my presence."
"..."
"Oh yikes!"
"A..ah. Madam. Sir."
"I stammered awkwardly, taken by surprise."
"She snorts derisively at my direction, and started to turn away."
"W-wait! Sorry. We wants to file a report."
"The fuck', we wants'?"
*Ahem*
"Would LIKE to file a report. Madam."
"For moment she stops in her tracks, debating whether to entertain my request."
"The door across chose that moment to opens and jars her into action."
"A pudgy hand reach under the desk and slams on to the counter top with a smudged yellow form."
"Fill this up."
"I stared down at it. A statement report."

And the four short lines in the treatment gets gets expanded to a rather large scene - and this isn't even quite the end either.

Each character is brought to life and our characters work off each other, keeping in mind the atmosphere and their current state of mind.

And what we finally have here, is the end result of many rewrites.

By the end of the writing process, we'd have gotten a very good view of the pacing and story. This serves as the blueprint as we move on to lighting and rendering - using this script as a guide on our scene locations and such, virtual location scouting so to speak.

That's it for now, I hope this has been an interesting peek behind-the-scenes on the process of making each release! Aye, It's a ton of work being this strict with writing and production, but I won't have it any other way :)

Have a great week everyone,

Lemonkey
