Apple charges a whopping 43% fee on all payments made through their app. That means if Iโve set a membership at ยฃ6, and you're subscribing via the Patreon app on your iPhone or using Apple Pay, you'll see it showing as ยฃ9(they round it up) โ with that extra money going straight to Apple.
You're not getting extra perks for that price, and I'm not receiving any of it either. Itโs just their cut for using the app. Which is completely ludicrous.
๐ก My advice?
If you want to avoid that extra cost (and who wouldnโt), simply sign up or manage your membership through a browser โ either on your phone, tablet, or desktop โ by logging in directly to www.patreon.com and paying through here. I would avoid using Apple Pay(until I Itโs the exact same experience, minus the unnecessary fees. You can then still continue to log in and use the iOS App, just don't use it for making the payments.
I also understand this may be different for different countries. I think in the States, you may have the option of using the iOS App and avoid paying the fee...I am unsure...But one thing is for sure, my membership is not ยฃ9. If you are seeing anything much north of ยฃ6(or anything north of $9USD) then you are paying a higher fee and likely the apple rate on top of it.
If youโre totally fine with it and want to support regardless โ of course, thank you. But Iโd rather you are not being overcharged and losing it to an Apple tax! So I would advise to use the browser for setting up payments.
