Woman Feminizes Her Ex-Boyfriend
Clover Cox
Minnieâs phone buzzed. She was having brunch with her best girlfriend Sonya. They were enjoying mimosas and chatting about their lives, feeling on top of the world, but Minnie came crashing down to earth when she saw the announcement on her screen. Her lips parted to scream, but she was too much of a lady to make a scene in public. She wanted to vomit. She wanted to flip the table and throw the chairs. Lawrence had no right!
âUh⊠are you okay? The air in here just shifted,â Sonya said with a light, uncomfortable laugh.
Minnie shook her head, still unable to speak. Her life was flashing before her eyes. All those late nights hanging out with Lawrence. Their relationship came to a screeching halt when he made a startling confession. Minnie reacted terribly. She removed him from her life, and it was probably the single biggest mistake sheâd ever made.
âHello? Minnie?â
âSorry,â Minnie said softly. âItâs Lawrence. Heâs getting married.â
âWhat?â Sonya said loudly. âTo that ice queen?â
âYes! Apparently he proposed a few weeks ago. Itâs official.â
âOh, Minnie. Iâm sorry.â
Minnie waved her hand in the air. âDonât pity me. Iâm fine,â she said in a sharp voice, but her heart ached when she glanced at the news article on her phone. âHe can marry whoever he wants.â
âYou donât have to act tough for me. I was there when you and Lawrence were the hottest couple on campus. Iâve been by your side every step of the way.â
Sonya and Minnie met during their freshman year of college when they were assigned to the same dorm room. It was friendship at first sight. They even had matching sheets. One thing led to the next, and they were eating lunch together and then dinner and had been friends ever since. They knew each other well, maybe even better than they knew themselves.
âHow do you feel?â
âHow do you think I feel?â Minnie hissed. She loved Sonya, but she hadnât even told her Lawrenceâs secret. She didnât tell anyone. She wished she could go back in time and redo the moment he revealed his truth to her, but there werenât any repeats in life. Minnie dug herself a hole from which she couldnât escape.
âYou donât have to snap at me.â
âLook, Sonya, Iâm sorry, but I donât know what to say right now. I wasnât expecting to see this story.â
âIs there a wedding date?â
âThe article said early September,â she said. âThatâs only a few months away.â
Sonya sighed. She hated seeing her friend stressed out, but there was nothing they could do. Lawrence had every right to move on to find love with someone else. âYou were the one who broke up with him, Minnie. Remember?â
âItâs not that simple.â
âYou told me that he wasnât doing it for you.â
Minnieâs soul was frazzled. She couldnât concentrate on a single thought without memories of the past popping into her head. Lawrence was the best boyfriend that she ever had. She was young and stupid when he revealed to her that he enjoyed wearing dresses and lingerie. Minnieâs reaction was hostile. She screamed at him for not being the man she expected. She felt deceived and disappointed. Her anger was enough to carry her for the first few months after the breakup, but doubt crept in eventually.
âWere you lying?â
âLawrence and I went through a rough patch,â Minnie said, maintaining her old lies. The ones she told to her family and friends but mostly to herself. She couldnât accept the truth. She couldnât handle the fact that she had the perfect boyfriend and let him go.
âSo you broke up, Minnie. Whatâs the big deal? Please donât tell me youâre still hung up on him after all these years.â
âHe was mine!â Minnie snapped, losing control of herself more than she liked. She cleared her throat. âI just canât believe heâs going to marry that woman. I know he doesnât love her.â
âMaybe he doesnât, but you have to let him go. Itâs not healthy holding on to the past.â
Minnie drank her water, wishing that she could escape Sonyaâs judgmental gaze. She didnât know what had really happened between her and Lawrence. Minnie hadnât said a word to anyone for Lawrenceâs privacy. He owed her. It wasnât fair.
âYouâre right,â Minnie said with a heavy sigh, giving her friend what she wanted to hear. âIâll leave it in the past. I shouldnât be worried about what Lawrence is doing with his life. Iâm nearly Ridgewoodâs number one real-estate agent! What do I need him for?â Minnieâs voice was bright and sassy like always, masking her aching heart, but Sonya bought the ruse.
She lifted her water glass. âCheers to keeping exes in the past where they belong.â
âCheers,â Minnie said and clinked her glass with Sonyaâs.
