Spend the day making some art to represent the setting for RIG.
Part of the style guide for the game is the sort of grandiose naming conventions you see in Dark Souls titles, and to a lesser extent games like Death Stranding. Murdered Earth was a bit too on the nose, and a bit inaccurate, so I went with something that attempted to describe an Earth that is different and very, very far in the future.
It is shells upon shells upon shells. Hollowed out, built up, broken, made new, then abandoned.
There is a storytelling technique that helped me here, called something like "flipping the script." You take a familiar premise and reverse it, and suddenly you have something compelling and maybe novel. Instead of a space faring human civilization that is spreading out among the stars, what if humanity brought all the stars and sights of the galaxy to Earth. What would that require? Why would they do that? What would it look like?
It's not perfect, but I'm getting more comfortable making art like this. And more importantly, less self-conscious about sharing my in progress work.
More to come soon. Enjoy.
