City Battlemap Megaproject: Here's where we are three days in (Work-in-Progress)

As you can see, I completely redesigned the layout from the original sketch. I had a few problems with it, but by far the biggest was the fact that it was crap. I like this one much better and I hope you do too.

The second picture is the sketch of the island layout with a basic description of what's on what's on each island. These are pretty broad strokes, but I'm going to start figuring out the details next. I'll decide what the various buildings will be, make a few edits to accommodate some things, then start drawing all this at a 5' (1.5m) grid scale. I'll draw one island at a time rather than all at once and I'll post each one when it's finished. When all the linework is done, I'll scan everything and start coloring.

The layout above isn't carved in stone yet, so if you have any thoughts about the map or what might make it better, by all means let me know. Or if you've got any questions, feel free to ask!

Can't wait to play it

Is this a game map? It's really exciting.

I don't imagine they make much use of horses here. There might be a stable by the farms somewhere, but I think these people tend to use handcarts and rickshaws mostly.

1. The original was not crap, but I do like this iteration better. 2. Where are beasts of burden cared for, or is there a tech solution that the city of islands utilizes instead?

Most of the bridges will probably be wooden and destructible in the event of an attack. Several will be lifting bridges/drawbridges. There will definitely be shipyards and a sawmill (in the building with a waterwheel by the stream coming down from the logging camp). There will be 3-4 lighthouses as well, maybe more. I'm not planning on drawing an underground level, so there won't be any passages under the riverbed, but that sort of thing can exist in your game even if it's not in the map.

It is also next to the fishing docks, though, so the night-time offshore breeze is likely to make living there an aromatic experience. :-) Depending on the predominant weather conditions, too, if there's a risk of damaging storms, "much better that they hit the poor - after all, their homes are so much cheaper to rebuild" (as the wealthy might put it, with no understanding of relative cost).

A couple thoughts: At least one island could have a two bridge situation covering the same route, with one being a new bridge snd the other being an old rickety one, maybe the new safe bridge has a toll on it? With a river delta things will move over time, so there might be some areas where the islands have been extended artificially to maintain their ‘historic’ shape, there may be other areas where buildings have become flooded and been abandoned, with third spaces existing where you have an old island edge snd a new island edge with different building styles. The river delta will inevitably have some shipwrecks in it, right? Two islands might be linked by a secret tunnel that goes deep beneath the riverbed. There could be a rocky outcrop within the delta that has a lighthouse on it to warn ships away (with shipwrecks coming from when the lighthouse has failed). With the city being costal it’s going to have a substantive shipbuilding industry and thus an associated timber industry, sawmills would be interesting buildings to see in the city, potentially even a forest on the edge where the wood is sourced from (though it could be delivered from upstream). Edit: Just looked again and you’ve already got the loggers on-map, perfect. Water mills in general would be a greater way to generate power in such a city, why bother hiring lots of labourers where you can use water wheels?

where the southeast "Poor" island is seems like much better real estate and views than the "Wealthy" Island. Sure its more exposed to attack, but thats what the navy is for. If I am gonna pay for a seaside villa, I wanna see the sea!
