Driftport 40K: In the grim darkness of the open sea, there is only fog - Patrons' Edition

The other version of Driftport is a pretty nice place. This is the version for DMs who imagine it as a place where the residents might drink turpentine, engage in cannibalism and sacrifice outsiders to an ancient abomination lurking deep beneath the waves. Or it can just be the night version, I suppose. Your call.

Drawing this gave me an idea for a map of another large, seafaring settlement and I wanted to get your opinions. Imagine a ship, like a galleon or a ship of the line, but much bigger. Bigger than any sailing ship ever built. 400' (130m) long and 140' (45m) across the beam. Eight masts, thirty sails. But this isn't just a ship, it's a town with hundreds of residents. Across the ship's 5-6 full decks, there are shops, craftsmen, a marketplace, a tavern, an inn, a temple, gardens, a library, a mill and a lot more. There are cabins for the middle class, luxury apartments for the rich and hammocks for the poor. This is a ship you could get lost in. It could be a community of traders, explorers, pirates or wanderers.

I don't know what the biggest ship map ever drawn is, but I'm fairly sure this would be larger by an order of magnitude. It would probably take around a month to draw and color. Anyway, is that something you'd be interested in?

That's a cool idea for it. I hadn't thought about it before, but I'm gonna make a Spelljammer background for this today.

Milby's Maps

Glad you like it! Thanks for proposing it to the Cartographic Congress, I think it was an excellent idea!

More of a moving city. It'd be built with permanent residents in mind, although there would be space for guests as well. At least an inn.

Milby's Maps

Sure, I'd do a space background for the Spelljammer folks out there.

I can also see this in a Spelljammer game. I'm imaging that for some reason each section still has its one gravity plane, so it's all lashed together a warped planks in a messed-up wooden floor. Walking around means the direction of gravity is always changing a little. Two people standing next to each other at a seam wouldn't be standing parallel to one another. Also, maybe the port was made of ships that lost their spelljamming helms. Maybe the adventure is restoring those helms so that pieces of Driftport can be released and sailed away?

I absolutely love how this turned out. Thanks for another amazing piece. In regards to the huge single city ship, I love the idea. Would give us an open sea competitor/enemy/ally to Driftport and the basis for all kinds of story options.

Looks great, regarding the big ship, are you thinking more cruise liner or moving city a la mortal Engines? Cause both would be fun

Lost_nebula

I would definitely use that ship in my spelljammer campaign, where I'll also certainly be using Driftport (maybe some kind of base from which the smaller boats are used to mine asteroids floating around it?...still brainstorming). Any chance of these on a spelljammer background? Regardless, awesome work, as always!

Jason

Yes.
