I brought you a lengthy little something for a mermay that was requested by one of the patreons. I never really dipped my toes into mermay in general, so itβs my first time drawing mermen yaaay! Iβm actually quite satisfied with the way Dekuβs body ( Ν‘Β° ΝΚ Ν‘Β°) looks here!
The little background story for this comic is that one day Deku disappeared from the village, and it was rumoured that he simply drowned due to his morbid curiosity for the sea. One day little Bakugou slipped off his boat while fishing and met Deku for the first time after his mysterious disappearance. He feels great relief from seeing his friend being alive, although after noticing how Deku changed and turned into something else - Bakugou, scared and shocked, runs away. Comic begins at the point of their adulthood. Deku, being little annoying himself, tries to approach Kacchan again and again until ultimately succeeding, or rather, seducing him into unspeakable heresy - to lay with the creature of sea! They keep meeting like that occasionally, but Bakugouβs anxiety grows more and more every time as heβs scared that villagers will find out about mermaids still existing in the waters, as majority of them were slaughtered for sake of wealth and luxury.

OK so i was thinking, what if the one cursed is not deku, but katsuki? hear me out there's katsuki who's a fisherman and knows an awful lot about mermaids and what is done to them, like detail kinda stuff what if his family was in said business when mermaids were plenty, but now they're scarce and went for common fish? what if mermaids weren't meant to be prey but equals to humans, people of the sea? what if the sea is sentient (wether as an avatar or just the simple mass of water, ur choice) and mermaids were their beloved children? let's say the entity can't really do anything about it since is a mortal matter and their only duty is maintain equilibrium, but this slaughter of mermaids altered the natural order and the sea can do something now what if they took the opportunity to shoot two birds with one stone and cursed those who caused the imbalance by taking their loved ones and turning them into the pray they hunted? as if saying "you took my children and saw them as prey and profit, regarded them as any animal, well, how do you like seeing a loved ones face on your plate?" but also as an opportunity to maybe change things for the better? maybe the sea knows the new generations have nothing to do with the old practices (that's why katsuki only worried about what the /old bastards/ would do to deku, but he never intended nor meant any harm to him) we kinda see that deku may be hermaphrodite, if the slicked entrance is any indication, maybe the sea wants to see if this could also lead to a new era of land and sea dwellers coexisting and even reproducing, blurring the line between the two
