5YL Episode 13 Rough Draft

Hey folks, Kuro here! This is a board I made in order to help gather my thoughts for the final two episodes of 5YL. Their scripts have been written in various chunks and pieces on-and-off since 2017, so back in January, I spent a lot of time going through every file, document, and notebook I had of all the events and lines I wrote for Ep13 & 14, and made this to streamline everything for when I wrote the final scripts. I’m pretty sure there’s a Video Diary somewhere showing this off as well. 

Here’s a fun look at said board. It’s censored, of course, for spoilers. You can also see some notable differences.

Scene 1 is the same.

Scene 2 is the same on the surface, but in this draft, I had the real Vlad be the one to sneak off, leaving the clone behind. I did this because I felt it would strengthen Danny’s feeling of betrayal when he finds out that the big talk he had was just with a clone, but I ended up making it the real Vlad in the end so the conversation felt more genuine. However, since their personalities are identical, this didn’t really change the scene, either. Danny was also going to detect Sam with his ghost sense before saying her name. I forgot why I cut this. Prob was a moment-breaker.

In Scene 3, the onomatopoeia Divinity hits Alien X with is BAM! instead of KA-POW!. I chose the latter because the word was longer and felt like it could be used as a weapon easier. 

In Scene 4, I was going to have Danny think about his rage throughout 5YL, as a mirror to Sam’s rage born from the terrible future. I had Eon make a similar point to Ben’s own rage at the end of the episode, so to avoid doing the same thing twice, I just put everything into Sam’s POV for the final scene, and I’d say it still works. It was more important for me to show the audience Ben reflecting on his outburst towards Lula than Danny’s outburst towards Vlad, as I cover that later on anyways. Vlad was also going to help Danny repair the cracks, which he sorta does by lending Danny his energy, but having Danny do it solo was the better option.

Scene 6 would’ve had the clone twist be revealed before we go back to the Nexus, but I broke up Scene 6 to happen before and after Scene 7 for pacing. Also, there are more changes that I can’t reveal why they were changed until Episode 14 is done, so we’ll have to revisit this sometime!

In Scene 7, like the 5YL opening, I considered using real clips of the shows versus redrawing them. It made sense to me since we already changed the art style in the episode so many times, and seeing the real clips from the shows might’ve made the scene hit in a special way for some viewers. But also like the 5YL opening, I ended up just drawing them from scratch, as it also could’ve come off too distracting, and potentially lazy.
