Your thoughts about how always being met with approval can be unpleasant and how it relates to Jinshi liking Maomao are interesting! Though also i think i interpreted the toy metaphor in the opposite way from you? I took it to mean that Jinshi is specifically *not* the person to get really taken by things or people and just throw them away after he gets bored. He never got bored with the toys, and as far as we know he might've just kept the first toy he liked forever, into adulthood, if it wasn't forcibly taken from him. I take it to mean that even the literal toys to him weren't 'just toys' that he could just throw away on a whim, and so Maomao certainly isn't that either. And imo that fits well with what you were talking in this video, that Jinshi probably really craves something real but has been deprived of it! (feel free to lmk if i misinterpreted what you meant) Oh and something else that's really intersting for me to hear is your perspective on romance, infatuation and stuff like that. I'm someone who has almost zero interest in romance, so seeing that stuff explained a bit more is kinda fascinating

We got a tiny hint about it in the last episode, where Gaoshun was pulled aside and told something privately, then started to tell Jinshi, but the scene was cut before we heard anything. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the "How to ruin a courtesan" question, though Jinshi's natural curiosity about Maomao gets him some more personal info from her. He waited until the last possible moment to ask, because he didn't really want to ask her, but had no one else he trusted enough. If you consider what Jinshi has seen of Maomao up to now, she has been rather self-contained and unbothered about her father or anyone else, aside from medical issues. We know she cares, but she never said anything to him about it. She was pretty blase about being kidnapped and everything, back at the garden party. The previous Empress wanted Luomen to work in the Rear Palace to look after her son's...girls...and any children they had. And to work in the Rear Palace, a man has to be a eunuch. Luomen's bad luck was to catch her attention as a skilled physician. Then it got messy with the simultaneous births of AhDuo's and the Empress Consort's children and the death of "AhDuo's" baby. Someone had to take the blame, and he may have been aware of the switch (if we assume that really happened), so he got kicked out. Remember, Maomao's records were faked by her kidnappers, so when she was researching AhDuo and found her father's name in the history book, she didn't tell anyone he was her dad. She only told Lady Fengming in their private conversation. She's dead, so no one else has made the connection with Maomao and her dad. Even if her new contract says she's the daughter of Luomen, they haven't connected him with the old palace doctor who got kicked out.
