Yeah there's something odd about the temporary = valuable idea, despite how ubiquitous it seems. Maybe it's that reflections on life's impermanence can help us appreciate it more? Help us not take it for granted etc. But that's noticing the beauty, not creating it.

2025-10-22 01:15:36 +0000 UTCDefinitely agree on the ‘thing for its own sake’ point. It’s often said that Eastern philosophy is superior to Western philosophy because good and evil are codependent rather than opposed for Eastern philosophies/religions. I disagree, of course. Reminds of the Marvel movie where the robot guy said “A thing is not beautiful because it lasts” and then seemed to say afterward that finitude is what makes something valuable. Also interesting about death being a flaw, as a Christian I am wont to agree. Death is the opposite of what we want, it was perhaps helpful for a time as a stepping stool, but an eternity contemplating the good and performing works of love is seen as superior to simply dissolving into nothing.

2025-09-21 13:21:21 +0000 UTCYeah I see that as well, but to be fair as a counter point and one a futurist like Caspian or Holstrom would argue is that's a limitation of a regular human society, not a digital one such as say the Geth Consensus from the Mass Effect games. In that scenario digital society starts shifting to a communal collective mindset, kind of like the hive mind of insects as scarcity is no longer a factor while efficiency is prized. Being able to think at and communicate at the speed of light allows for all kinds of progress on debate, voting, sharing thoughts, memories and perspectives etc etc. In that scenario the more minds you add to the collective the better. EDIT: That said Maddie as a flesh and blood human isn't there yet and probably can only experience the drawbacks right now 😅

2025-09-20 05:32:18 +0000 UTCI mean I get maddies point not that I'd agree in saying certain people should definitely die, but the kinds of people definitely exist who would not be willing to relinquish power forward to the next generation if they knew their coming death just wasn't a factor. You can also argue that in a deathless society what would be the purpose of reproduction? And then there you can easily argue that lack of novelty in new minds could lead to lack of novelty in new thoughts which then leads to stagnation and other problems of the sort. I can easily see it

2025-09-20 03:20:08 +0000 UTCYeah this opening for the episode really caught me off guard because it makes you realize what they originally planned for Rachel had Caspian not discovered the truth before they could inflict this inflection point. This is way worse then even thinking Renee was originally Hannah 😰
