Like the previous episode though, the reasons why the mystery exists is the much more interesting question, rather than the mysteries themselves.

2025-09-20 01:26:11 +0000 UTCOne thing I appreciate about the addition of Lakan in these episodes (though, like you, I simultaneously wanted him off the screen because of his vileness) is that we finally see Jinshi on the back foot. Yes, he's thrown off his game occasionally by Maomao, but generally he and Maomao are able to keep up with each other, pick up hints and subtext, etc. He seems intellectually and emotionally stimulated—or maybe freed—by his interactions with her. With Lakan, it seems like Jinshi is always a little behind, trying to find his way in the fog. Instead of freeing or stimulating, his interactions with Lakan are exhausting. TL;DR: I like what Lakan shows us, through contrast, about Jinshi and his relationship with Maomao.

And the games that he enjoys playing are both Go and Shogi, both associated with strategy(I've never played either, but I'd like to learn and play one day). And it appears that Lakan is alluding to and implying to many different things in his conversation with Jinshi at the end. But now, Maomao has the attention of the emperor's master strategist, Jinshi, favor with both Gyokuyo and Lihua, accomplished a personal request of the Emperor himself, and discovered the cause of the babies dying and Lishu's targeted assassination attempt was prevented because of her. She's never gonna go back to just Apothecary work, at this rate! She's been doing more mystery solving than Apothecary business and it just works!
