maomao’s throwaway line of “i grew up poor” to explain away how she’s just op at any task the plot demands sounds kind of silly. however, speaking from personal experience, there’s definitely some truth to it. Poverty/lack of resources kind of forces you to be way more creative/self-sufficient than someone who is accustomed to having all their needs met. There’s a saying my mom used to say growing up that translates to “He who knows how to be poor, knows everything.”

2025-09-20 16:34:02 +0000 UTCThe new consort seemed to only react to Maomao talking to Jinshi so either (1) she's interested in Jinshi himself or (2) she's interested in them talking. I would assume that she's met him before. This show sometimes isn't great showing the actual passage of time. I refuse to believe that a new consort wouldn't have met the boss / manager of the rear palace first thing. On the other hand, a lot of shows employ a "if we didn't show it, it didn't happen in the background, despite making sense that it would".

2025-09-12 03:21:40 +0000 UTCI had learned about dust explosions prior to watching Apothecary Diaries, so once I saw the flour it clicked for me lol. But yeah, as stated in this episode, these seemingly random events are only perceived that way due to a lack of insight or context of the overall bigger picture or a series of events. But in this episode, we're officially introduced to some new faces! Sir Lakan and Consort Loulan. So we briefly see Lakan investigate the scene in this episode the night of the explosion, and it seems he understood what happened without saying anything. But we saw him in the previous episode near the end and he appears to have his eyes on Maomao. Maomao is just really bad at not standing out. Familiar with 3 of the 4 main concubines, has fulfilled a personal favor for the emperor, stopped an assassination attempt in the palace, saved the lives of 2 of the 4 main consorts from dying, befriended men in the military, is personally familiar with the three princesses of the Verdigris House, and of course, is the main object of interest to the beautiful eunuch Jinshi. She's the embodiment of suffering from success. But where do we go from here?
