Absolutely, and also just physical criticisms in general in Korea 😂 There's not as much of a stigma around pointing out people's physical imperfections, in fact sometimes it feels like it might even be seen as kindness (something like: if you haven't fixed this it might mean you're not aware of it, so I have an obligation to let you know). So sometimes you'll hear comments about one particular physical flaw over and over again

Many poor families would legally sell their real children this way - it gave those kids a roof, clothes, and food, and also got the rest of the family some money in return. It's not slavery, technically, since it's only for two years, and they get paid. It also gives them opportunities they would never have gotten - to learn a trade or meet people who might hire them permanently after their term is done. But the kidnappers did some business with Fengming's family, and Fengming being executed as an attempted murderess wrecked the whole family. You can't have any connections to such a person and be accepted in the most protected and intimate part of the palace. Gaoshun definitely arranged for that whole party and then forced Jinshi to go to it, even though Jinshi would have rather wallowed in his mushroom corner. Jinshi started off thinking Maomao was a challenge and fun to tease, but at some point, he began to respect her for who she is, what she can do, and all the different sides she's shown him. It's pretty clear to everyone (other than Jinshi and Maomao) that he loves her or has a huge crush on her.
