Something I really like about Maomao’s character, is that despite it being difficult for her to show certain emotions at times, the show does a great job of implying how she’s feeling despite her not physically expressing it all the time.

There's a recent action movie called Novocaine with that premise

Oh man, the ending of this episode was EVERYTHING. We get the flashback moment of Maomao and how death seems to always surround her in one way or another, her short but in-depth introspective conversation with Jinshi about if he's to execute her one day in the future if she makes a mistake, the duality between how the death of Sir Kounen is being handled vs the death of the servant girl who drowned in the moat is quickly dismissed, the subtle but noticeable shift in tone this episode. I probably should go back and watch this episode again myself because there's just so much to digest in this episode compared to those before it. And not to mention, at the end we know the identity of the person with the burns we were searching for all the way back with the color changing flames episode. We still are in the single digit episodes, btw. Just how many layers are there to this show??? Iirc, season 1 has like 24 or 25 episodes or something like that?

I think one of the most interesting aspects of having maomao be our window into this story is that we forget how much her own emotions/perspective does influence how things are framed. She perceives herself as someone who is more objective, or at least not very emotional. I feel like you correctly picked up on how her own thoughts and preoccupations are seeping into her investigation here. Just in terms of what is on her mind, she is clearly in a darker place. She at times can also be an unreliable narrator - she can miss things or misunderstand situations because of her own disposition. Sometimes it's hard to remember that though the story follows maomao, there's more going on that she doesn't always catch. And simultaneously in this case, her own feelings totally shape the framing of the events at the palace as we get to see them unfold. Anyhow - I love when this show effortlessly balances the darker topics with some levity.

For the movie with the person who can't feel pain, the only thing I can think of is one of the Bond movies. There must be a better example

Can't resist fate/death? Tell that to the Pantheon universe Mao Mao. Honestly feeling some whiplash between the themes there and now watching this episode again 😅
