2025-08-29 19:57:36 +0000 UTCThe doctor not being competent is a plot point that is pointed out and explained at least twice, so I'm not sure how you missed it. Mao Mao is exceptional, but I don't see how that makes her a Mary Sue? She has a single field that she's very, very accomplished in, but outside of that, she falls short in many aspects? If she was just an apothecary of average skill, we wouldn't be following her perspective because it would be boring, frankly. She sucks at reading people's emotions, she's a pretty poor player when it comes to politics, and her insistence of staying out of them have bitten her in the back multiple times. She is not also "prettier and smarter" than everyone in her time period. Luomen is literally described as being smarter than her, and there will be several characters who will be described as smart or smarter than her in terms of intelligence or in their own specific fields.

2025-08-20 06:35:07 +0000 UTCOne of the few criticisms of the series is that Maomao is a huge Mary Sue. She happens to know forensics, she happens to know chemistry, she happens to know medicine. She is "not like other girls" because she doesn't like the attractive male lead. She's a bit plain oh, but in reality, she's incredibly beautiful and she chooses to hide her beauty. She is a combination of detective Monk and House MD, except she doesn't have any flaws and she's prettier and smarter than everyone living in her time period. One of the absolute worst examples is the useless doctor. It's the PALACE and he is the IMPERIAL doctor for the ladies. They probably searched quite a bit to find someone to fill the requirements. And he's portrayed as a slapstick.

2025-08-13 21:55:44 +0000 UTC"Ugh. I lose!" What everyone says when they are up against Maomao. Lihaku will be forever in Maomao's debt (or to Verdegris House) after he carelessly handed out some cheap hairpins to cute girls at the party. Gyokuyou's amusement at watching Jinshi getting more and more smitten with Maomao as she constantly ignores, cringes, or avoids his attentions adds an extra layer of fun to their interactions. "Oops. You fell down and disqualified yourself as my concubine. Go away. Someone get me Jinshi..." ROFL! What exactly IS Jinshi's real status? No one in their right mind would put their best neutered-boy-concubine in charge of all the girl-concubines, not even to test their loyalty/chastity. So what could be the reason for Jinshi's role in the Rear Palace?

2025-08-13 08:51:03 +0000 UTCVery random, but I'm very distracted by the detail of having grass growing through the roof tiles in Maomao's home and the surrounding buildings. It feels like something they'd include on purpose, but I can't remember seeing that anywhere before, and I'm not really sure how I'd even look it up.

2025-08-13 02:54:55 +0000 UTCThe very rare chill episode where nothing major is happening! Well, aside from Maomao being able to go home, that is. I think this was the perfect spot for an episode like this. The Garden Party just wrapped up and now we've returned home. And yeah, you read that right, it's been 10 months since she was sold to the Rear Palace. Much has happened in so little time, in the episode sense anyways. But what I like most about this episode, aside from Maomao finally returning home, is that the events during the garden party may be finished, the investigation behind said events is still ongoing. It's still something we're looking into. And now we get a small peek into what Jinshi is like when he's not around everyone else. It also has been revealed now that Jinshi and Gaoshun's relationship has been continuous since he was born. And there's the passing comment about nobody knowing/discovering Jinshi's true status. Just something to think about or keep in the back of your mind. All in all, a pretty light episode with not quite as much happening as other episodes.
