For some reason now I wake up at two thirty-ish in the morning and can’t fall back asleep. Then I start doing things like stare at the shadowy form of my snoring husband and think “some day he will die” or “which one of us will go first” or “one day I will definitely die and I can’t do anything about it “ or “I wonder if there are any cookies left downstairs in the kitchen.” Then invariably one of my cats will sense I’m awake and begin circling my head and stepping on my face. This causes a chain reaction of allergic sniffles which in turn forces me to leave the bed on a quest to find something on which to blow my nose. Soon I realize I need to pee and my footsteps in the hall activate the two other cats, including sick-cat whose current steroid doses give her enough energy to desire food in the middle of the night. Not wanting to deny sick-cat anything I finally make my way downstairs to the kitchen where I feed all three cats and then do important things like look for cookies, turn on the porch light to check for any interesting nocturnal creatures and tiptoe into the sunroom to check all six sleeping birds are alive and not lying dead at the bottom of their cages while trying not to give them night-frights which will cause them to fall to the bottom of their cages. When all this is done I usually fall asleep again somewhere downstairs but by then it is nearly time to get up. But right now I am hovering between the allergic sniffles and have to pee phase and I’m considering popping AirPods in my ears and listening to your voice instead. The notification for your new audio popped up just as I was waiting for “Spamalot” to begin at a local theater and had dancing knights and killer bunnies to distract me. I passed out with exhaustion as soon as I got home and now I’m up in the night again but much cheered by your interactive presence in the comments and the excitement of a new audio.
