Also I am aware I’m biased, I went with a group of female filmmaker type friends and we all actually had similar feelings in why we didn’t like it. But anyways, one of the friends is from New Mexico (where the nuclear bomb was created) and has been affected by the effects the Manhattan Project and the community she grew up in, significantly. I do like inception and interstellar but honestly I don’t think Nolan is the greatest filmmaker making movies right now. Also I probably should have done a better edit of my thoughts but… I did not. Sorry if anything is repetitive! 🚨stop here if you don’t want spoilers. I’m going to start by saying that I felt like the only character I cared about was Emily Blunts character/his wife, and I think it’s probably because of what she brought to the role. The very few women characters were reallllllllllly poorly written and developed, it was hugely disappointing. We were talking about it after the movie and it’s possibly the only time two women talked to each other over the course of the movie was in a weird fantasy/hallucination bit. I get that the story isn’t about the women, but it would not have hurt the story to give them some personality. Emily Blunt (bless her) is pretty much an unhappy housewife with a drinking problem and it feels like that’s sort of her character, we don’t get to know a whole lot more. Poor Florence Pugh (jean tatlock) got is so much worse too. Her personality is being a communist and not liking flowers? Oh and seeing her boobs. Honestly I’m fine with nudity and I got some of it but… why were they together? The movie next explains this. And honestly at least half the scenes with Flo were just of her boobs. So much of the movie felt totally devoid of emotion to me when it would have been so much more interesting to lean in. I get that we needed to know her character could have brought Oppenheimer down due to her communist ties but it just didn’t work for me in that she can still have some personality! I know women were mistreated in this era but my god they still had some personality. The first half hour or so was technically really bad from my standpoint. Waaaaaaaaay too many cuts to the point where it was really distracting from the story. I’m sure that there was a purpose of that but… it was unclear to me and if it’s distracting from the story I don’t think it should be there. Honestly same with the black and white effect, it seemed to be used at random. Also I don’t think the script was good, a lot of the problems could have been solved/less bad with a better script. Most of the performances were so boring (again, writing/directing problem I don’t blame the actors), it felt like they were often playing characatures (like I know they were playing historical figured but that doesn’t mean it has to be weird) Also I know it’s based on a book but it seems so simple and boring to essentially make the movie about his drama with Strauss versus so many more interesting and nuanced parts of it. The way I felt and the discussion with my group was that it felt forced to try to make it feel like Oppenheimer a hero compared to Strauss? To really send the message home that’s he’s a hero? Idk but that whole part (which is a huge part of the movie) just felt uninteresting (you gotta be interesting if it’s 3 hours, imo). I just didn’t care about that at all. We’ve seen the whole beginning of the movie, the audience know he’s not a communist or a spy (or the really f’ed up the stakes and we were supposed to be unsure)? Again the stakes just weren’t there and aside from a few cool moments (w/Truman and Einstein) it was boring. There was so much about Strauss they may as well have named it for him as well. IDK almost ending the world seems like a more interesting take, not to mention the insane destruction that it caused to so many communities, Japan, and the world (see more below on this). Like ‘oh we might destroy the whole world but ha funny let’s make a bet on it.’ Okay and going back to my friend, it feels so dishonest to just skip over the effects all of this left in the state of New Mexico. They stole the land from hispano/hispanic families which isn’t talked about in the movie, sometimes at gunpoint and sometimes killing their livestock. Their homes were bulldozed. And then in the movie they explain they can just give the (VERY CONTAMINATED LAND) back to the Indians there was audible gasps in my group. And exclaiming how beautiful the land is but yeah let’s go ahead and totally f it up for the people who live there, coooooool.
