My family (also Catholic) were never midnight mass people for either Christmas or Easter. We would usually go to the children’s mass on Christmas Eve, where there was a children’s Christmas pageant. I was Joseph one year as a kid. Those masses were always kind of chaotic, and one year the (adult) director of religious education (who I think was also in charge of coordinating the Christmas pageant) leaned over a pulpit and set her hair on fire on a candle.
