It clears out the undergrowth, refertilises the soil with ash, and pops open many kinds of seed pods that would otherwise remain shut. Many types of trees are equipped with loose bark and flammable oils so they burn fast and hot but ultimately only on the surface, and then new shoots spring out all over their bark. So in a very real sense the forest fires are a season of their own.
