After the Korean War a lot of U.S and to some extent UK supplies were left behind and Spam became quite a prized item in a time with a lot of famine, since then it's incorporated into a lot of comfort foods and truly is an item that gets gifted, especially on a Holiday like Chuseok. It may be somewhat falling out of fashion as the world "shrinks", but still wouldn't be seen as too different from gifting nice coffee or chocolates.
