Shrink Bots. The newest and hottest tech to sweep the world from the instant it was released. Top of the line, these bots would allow a user to connect their consciousness into tiny bots of various sizes and perform tasks normally impossible for that of a normal person. The biggest catch was that while the mind was out of the body, the body still needed to be taken care of. That meant special facilities where people would be hooked up to life sustaining equipment for the duration of the experience.
What made it even more successful was that once the algorithms were figured out, reproduction was easy. The tech was for the bots was fairly simple, it was creating the machines that enable people to link with these bots that took so much time to figure out. Once all that was figured out, Shrink tech hit the streets and the rest was history. The implications were endless and it's uses vastly grew within mere months. It was quickly being used in every aspect people could dream of.
While the bots were built extremely tough, in the off chance that anything should happen to damage the bot, the mind automatically kicks back to the body in a default safety protocol. However, adversely, should anything happen to sever the connection between the body and the bot, the mind would find itself forever trapped within the bot and the body would become brain dead. Once the connection is severed, there is no fixing it. All that could be done is the transference from one bot to another.
Of course, greed quickly found great profit in this as well. Their were communities created for the extremely wealthy so that when their time was almost up, they could connect with a bot, sever the tie, and live forever in paradise. Prisons also were quick to see great promise in the tech. There were multiple levels of how shrink tech was used in prison. For some, it was a voluntary service that upon completion would lead to early release. These people would be put into bots and send out to paying customers who would use them for all sorts of degrading tasks, often so horrible that most inmates would never speak of their experiences beyond expressing how glad they were it was over.
They also abolished the death penalty, and in its place became what quickly became known as "Eternal Servitude." They would put the inmate into a bot, disconnect the body, and then sell the bot cheap with a forever warranty, so should anything happen to the bot, the inmate would then be transferred to a new one to continue carrying out their punishment. These inmates got put through the absolute worst of the worst.
Not only was their punishment never-ending, but their owners had complete control over them through a simple app on their phone. They could intensely heighten the senses as well as control all motor functions. And at such a cheap price they were often sold to creeps, freaks, and sadistic weirdos. But before anyone had a chance to purchase an inmate, the offer first went before the family of the victim in the crime. So in many cases, the inmates are released to the people who truly want to see them suffer the most.
Hospitals used the tech for non invasive surgeries with far superior precision at such a small size. Factories used it for repairing equipment. And that was just the start. As it commercialized and popularized the prices quickly dropped to more affordable experiences. It wasn't long before the common class was able to rent the experience for themselves at a fairly affordable price. It was paving the way for a whole new form of vacation. Now people could stay home and explore a world around them that they were never fully aware existed.
All you had to do was go into a Shrink Bot Center and they would get you all set up. You could design your own image for your bot by simply providing a few pictures of what you want to look like, as customization is easy. Some people even like to be adventurous and use bots in the form of bugs and animals for a whole new world of experiences. Not to mention a lot of people would use these services to fulfill their sick and perverse fantasies. With all the possibilities, everybody wanted in, and because it was easy money, everyone got in.
It didn't take long for the tech to work its way into upper middle-class homes as well. Owning a Shrink Bot machine became a very quick status symbol. The wealthy would even pay people to come over and use the machine for their entertainment. Of course, waivers always had to be signed, and there were more than a few shady people out there looking to enslave people and had the right lawyers to create airtight waivers that were in all actuality contracts where people would unknowingly sign their lives over to these complete strangers.
Shrink Bots could be just as lucrative as they are dangerous. With all the help it's brought to the world, one can't help but wonder if the darkness that it brought along with it was simply a necessary evil. Only time will tell how deep of an effect, whether positive or negative, Shrink Bots will have on society as a whole...
