An actual batfish has them, but is of course a little fish living underwater. I figure on this one, they're sensory rather than helping to support its body

Suggestion: search for Large Polyp Stony corals (LPS corals, as they're known in the aquarium trade). In particular, frogspawn, octospawn and hammer corals of the genus Euphyllia. You'll understand why.

I'm thinking now that if I upgrade Nocturtle, its back may be an entire vampiric coral reef; vampire corals may be virtually powerless compared to other vampires without a mutualistic symbiosis for transportation
