Also I found the phrase "It was recognized as a female snake by its long blonde hair and a woman-like appearance", which sounds about like how you sex snakes.

Probably Westerners finding a thing fascinating without wanting to learn more about it, thus causing a demand for a lot more to be produced. Not so gruesome as what happened with shrunken heads, but the same general principle.
