Grrl Power #1325 - Open the door, get on the floor

Thank you for the support! You guys are awesome!

"Cretaceousify" is the nonomatopoeia, in case it's hard to read. Maybe I should have gone with "Cretaceous-ify," but that looks too close to "iffy." "Cretacify" might work spoken, but written it's confusing.

"Node runny" is a typo, but... screw it. It works.

Theriomorphs would definitely have a pecking order. And not just cause some of them are birds, hah hah. Actually, very few of them are birds. But my point is, were-carnivores would definitely have their own cool kids' club, most of the jockeying between the wolves, bears great cats, alligators, crocks, etc, though the less common but still meat-eating-even-if-that-includes-omnivorous-stuff animals like wolverines and badgers still get to look down on all the herbivores. Did you know wolverines eat foxes? Also berries and small game animals like rabbits, but foxes? That surprised me. The were-moose guy gets to look down on everyone but the were-giraffe guy, because moose are fucking hyooge.  Most of the herbivores feel a little nervous around the carnivores instinctually... well, maybe not the were-ox or were-elephant or were-rhino. Kat has to resist the urge to Muay Thai the carniweres around her in the face and groin area. Her herbivore fight or flight instinct is colored by her anger over not being something cool like a were-tiger or Komodo Dragon.

I hadn't thought to include dinosaurs in the list of possible theriomorphs, but I do like the explanation of someone trying to "do a jurassic park," and accidentally reviving/infusing/creating an ancient virus instead. Like, when you cast your super bespoke reanimation spell, make sure you know exactly what you're targeting.  It also kind of gives me an idea for a bad guy, and I'm so bad at coming up with bad guys. The "I'm crazy" and "I'm greedy" bad guy archetypes are soooo boring to me, but I guess sometimes evil isn't complex. I just like villains to have a little more meat. Ideally, most reader would be like "I don't agree with his methods, but I get where he's coming from."

You may have noticed the title with the random portraits wasn't working. (On the Grrl Power website, not here on Patreon.) Someone very helpfully pointed out that there was a "LetsEncypt Cert update, and [...] "grrlpowercomic.com" didn't get added as a SAN (just www.grrlpowercomic.com)" I do not know what a SAN is, but I contacted the host and they added the non-www version to the... SAN? Cert? The thingy. The internet spider that plucks at the interwebz. Anyway, should be working now. And if not, you might not be able to read this anyway. Hopefully that will clear up the other errors people have been reporting.

Honestly the site needs a real going over. I used to know .CSS when I originally... not built the site, but themed it, but it's been a long time since I've done anything with that stuff besides tweaking a few annoying sites in Stylish, and I don't know anything about PHP.  I don't even have the time to hire someone to do it because some of the updates would need to be done by me anyway, like the character bio page basically hasn't been updated since I posted about page 80, and it's been broken for about 8 years anyway. :/

What about a were-orca?

Tim N

Didn't even have the decency to get your Barney Trivia right, the Triceratops is Green. This would of course be followed up with "Sydney why do you know the Triceratops from Barney and Friends is Green?" Then again purple is a better color for her, pairs well with the orange jumpsuit

IvyReed

She could probably give Superman a sprained wrist.

eddi_TBH

So apologies, but I think the rainbow on her arm disappeared in the last panel.

Jack Ponder

checking it out!

Merle Blue

Maxima at full strength could definitely beat Slam in an arm-wrestling contest!

Merle Blue

Just a hare, yes.

Person

I don't feel anything involving Moose would be concerned with individual carnivores...Unless you pull in a Were-Orca, of course.

Scott Brown

Velcro would be easier, pops open when transforming, just a push down when returning

Martin Croft

Sydney doesn't DO thought bubbles, anything in her train of consciousness comes out her mouth.

Martin Croft

The biggest problem with complex villains is that it becomes hard to not 'fix' them so they aren't as villainy over time. The simpler they are the easier it is to keep them in their nice little villain box.

Anton Schleef

Rabbits are cute when they sneeze.

eddi_TBH

There's gotta be some Velcro in there.

eddi_TBH

We should add selfishly obsessed to run of the mill villain motives

eddi_TBH

And as a wererabbit she does feel a little left out.

eddi_TBH

More realistic than "unstable molecules". I kept hoping the suits would go to a gaseous phase.

eddi_TBH

That's probably easier actually.

eddi_TBH

Awkward zipper locations.

eddi_TBH

"Everyone walk the dinosaur!"

eddi_TBH

What are the chances we get a thought bubbles from Sydney wondering if she should go for being a Dino.

FuzzyDragon Cosplay

"The "I'm crazy" and "I'm greedy" bad guy archetypes are soooo boring to me, but I guess sometimes evil isn't complex." I'd say the overwhelming majority of real world villains are either motivated by Ego, or Greed (or both), with a side of Hate a lot of the time (gotta get your prejudice on after all). It may be boring, but there it is.

Eric Loken

Going to assume the first part was Directed at Spike not me. I totally mixed up the orbs, I get those two colors wrong a lot for some reason, also thought because of the "headbutt" bit in the bottom that the ForceOrb made more sense in my head. XD

Leif Garcia

I love Slams expression in the second panel

SheepFace2000

Yup. The hardest bad guys to fight are the ones where you sympathize with their reasons for being bad.

Cha0sniper

…… Were-Dragon. It’s gonna happen. Mark my words

Aaron Mauthe

The zippered darts at the arms, legs, and waist are SUCH a cool touch! How better to keep her outfit on between forms?

Merle Blue

I understand what happened with the similar outfits, but Dave, you switched Kat and Sydney in the last two panels. Cute Dino btw.

Bradley

Her sleeve is in the same place in panels one and two - Dave just forgot to add her skin art in p1 & p5. Also, Syd is holding hentorb and a cup of coffee (or hot chocolate, or something...), not the ForceOrb. She isn't threatened by a friendly dino - at least, not if she has an I-beam handy. But I doubt she's even concerned about that. She didn't "Holy Fuck!", she asked a cogent question.

AlpineBob

If it ever becomes relevant: Slam is my character, and Dave has my explicit permission to do anything he likes with her, carte blanche, irrevocable, and you may quote me on that!

Merle Blue

Seconded.

Kevin Wright

Node was vaguely weird when read, but also fit the statement so I just went with it, makes sense

Matthew Lambert

Cretaceousify!

Hugh Eckert

That was Kat saying that, actually...

Hugh Eckert

Yeah, okay, that's pretty awesome.

Raymond Dannelly

"How is that fair!?" Sydney, I'm sure she's not on Maxima's tier. Or even yours.

Stephen Gilberg

Read the webcomic "Dinosaur Bones." Trixie is cute.

Stephen Gilberg

A.k.a. pseudo-onomatopoeia or "unsound effects."

Stephen Gilberg

Hey Dave? If we can request models for the pinups, can you do Slam next?

Corndogman5160

Onomatopoeia are words that resemble a sound effect, like "buzz" or "meow". Therefore, nonomatopoeia are like onomatopoeia, but not. They represent sounds without sounding like them. "Unsnap" and "dezip", also used here, are examples.

Erin Palette

I mean - Land Before Time, Dinosaurs, Land of the Lost, Jurassic Park, Toy Story 3, One Million Years BC, the Chicago Field Museum, various stop-action monster movies, LOTS of books... I've definitely seen more triceratops than I can shake a stick at. :)

Richard Riley

Here's the thing - some of the herbivores are more dangerous, but it's specifically the pack animals who are going to be specifically trying to organize so they can be in charge, and the pack carnivores that are going to be aggressive about it. It's a matter of mindset. We could draw comparisons between pack carnivores and pack herbivores to modern political parties, but while I think that might be interesting to do, this isn't a great venue for it. Plus I don't feel like dealing with the pack carnivore supporters today.

Richard Riley

Honestly I like it better this way.

Richard Riley

I have to ask: "nonomatopoeia"? 😊

Czarzhan

Kinda wondered what the "mystery orb" might do...

JasonAW3

Did you know, hippos can jump higher than a house? Because houses can't jump...

JasonAW3

Ding ding ding!! Slam intentionally named herself like a Dinobot. (It's not her LEGAL name, but she never uses that one.)

Merle Blue

Look, she was interning at a natural history museum...

Merle Blue

gotta love Sauron-the-pterodactyl-who-named-himself-after-book-Sauron :D

Merle Blue

I just checked, and kinda? At the start of the page where she got introduced to Kat, she asked “Can anyone sign up for this gig?”, which could be asking to be were-ed, but it was treated the same as the rest of her onslaught of questions about how this all worked, not as a request for a life-changing demonstration, and I highly doubt any lawyer would say that that was actually asking to be turned.

Connor Mcharg

Hah! Fun! Thought that was Dabbler from the preview image.

BJ

Hippos kill way more people per year than sharks do. Possibly because hippos have more opportunities, but still...

Torabi

An awful lot of animals aren't all that picky and will eat whatever they can fit in their mouths. They're not committed to a particular diet. At the intersection of were-dinosaurs, potentially-relatable villains, and magical jurassic park... Well, there's this guy: https://imgur.com/i-want-to-turn-people-into-dinosaurs-YKaqaTH

Torabi

Sounds like someone needs an introduction to the thagomizer…named after the late Thag Simmons.

StLOrca (pronounced Ess Tee Ell Orca)

That is an impressively optimized jumpsuit, to be able to look that good at both sizes with only zippers and buttons to adjust it.

Jared Kolbly

The Transformer was named Slag, or Slug. Alongside Snarl, Sludge, and Swoop.

Torabi

Now I know what happened to that baby dinosaur in the ABC series “Dinosaur” after Earl Sinclair dooms the prehistoric world due to climate cooling and not forecasting that meteor.

Miyaa

Is that SUPPOSED to be "node" is runny not "nose" or is that a typo?

Justaguy

Yeah I'm not saying the carni-weres ARE the most dangerous theriomorphs, just that there's a cool kids club that most of them subconscious adhere to. Also some of the carni-weres are a little full of themselves if we're being honest.

Dave Barrack

Castlevania (the netflix series) has the best villain I've seen in a long time. He's not greedy, or crazy, or even really particularly evil. He's sad and angry about how the ignorance and stupidity of the general populace resulted in his wife being burnt at the stake. When I first watched it I was confused as hell as to how this was supposed to be the *bad guy* when I really just absolutely agreed with him in every way.

Magraal

Look at the page before this one, the Tattoo is clearly visible.

Leif Garcia

In the first panel, she hasn't pulled up her sleeve to reveal the tattoo, yet - she does so in the second panel. The last panel is harder to explain.

Spike

She gives of strong "I am desperately trying to spin my origin into something cool" energy.

Andrew Denton

Okay, no. Just. No. I am sick and tired of this alleged carnivore supremacy among therianthropes. You know what the deadliest quadrupeds in Africa are? It's not lions or hyenas. It's the motherfucking HIPPOS. Herbivores -defend themselves and the herd- and they are so good at it that carnivores have to -settle- for the weak and sickly, because the healthy leaf-eaters will -kick their skulls in- or -bite them in half-. So I expect Slam here to be the baddest-ass undisputed queen of the werefolk who has walked the earth in the past sixty-five million years.

Evil Midnight Lurker

Forget foxes, wolverines will eat WOLVES. As well as any other creature that gets in their (incredibly bad-tempered) way. Though they might also just kill it and leave it because they're assholes like that. Wolverines are vicious vastly out of proportion to their size. They're basically what you get if you make badgers bigger, stronger, and angrier.

Madcat6204

She appears to be missing her Rainbow tattoo in the first panel and the last panel. Love that Sydney is just holding her Forcefield Orb just in case she needs it.

Leif Garcia

How many triceratops have you seen?

Marc Vun Kannon

Cutest Triceratops I ever did see.

Sam Turner

SAN is Subject Alternative Name, a list of alternative "names" that can be verified by your SSL cert. It can verify grrlpowercomic.com or www.grrlpowercomic.com but not www.grrIpowercomic.com (sneaky character) or something-else-at.grrlpowercomic.com (different subdomain)

Brett Peirce

She did ask, when being introduced to the Twilight Council. 1 page before she got introduced to Kat.

Fogel

Yeah, I honestly thought she would have at some point

KnightRider007

So her name...or nickname....is slam...and she's a dinosaur. I feel like that should be a reference somehow.

Immortal_Knight

"we apologize for the fault in the subtitles. Those responsible have been sacked"

Immortal_Knight

Maybe it is time to do a little update of the character page ... ;-)

Thomas Dorner

…y’know, I’m surprised we haven’t seen Sydney ask to be Were’d yet… She seems like she’d be into collecting a new power or two.

Connor Mcharg

Fun moose fact. One of their predators are Orca. A møøse once bit my sister. No realli!

Steve Ronuken

Uppies! I want uppies!

Tannerbot

So I guess Denver wasn't the last dinosaur. Neat.

Michael Obert
