Quick Update

Finished and sent off my second EC/Oni script for the Catacomb of Torment series. I think I did five drafts on it, with a page rewritten almost at the last minute. I think it's better for it. I was really happy with the first script when I turned it in. I'm worried about this one. I feel like there's places it might have gone wrong, I don't have a lot of faith in it. Maybe I'll feel better about tomorrow. Anyway, it's in with the editor and will go through the EC estate and then I'll find out if there's any serious revisions to be made. I have to remember to ask if I can pitch any more ideas. I really like writing short horror comics, it's something I hoped to do for myself (collaborating with other artists) but the paying anthology market is barren and I'm not in a position to coordinate artists and a crowdfunder. I have a batch of stories in my notes and I'd like to write them. Beasts of Burden is the next thing I have to work on, maybe Blackwood someday. I miss them both.

I'll be getting back to the drawing board tomorrow, been away from it for the most part these last two weeks. Get some lines down on commissions and drawings. I have some layouts to do, some little index card sketches to finish, and a potential project that requires preliminary artwork. Not much, I just have to get it done so that can take another step (it's something pretty exciting, fingers crossed it happens). And a few other things I haven't had time to get to. being busy has been good for me. Takes my mind off the state of things. For a little while, at least.

Hope to have more art here soon, get back to the World's Funnest review, the Eltingville storyboards, and get some PDFs up for the print tier. After the comic comes out in August I'll post the first EC script PDF for that tier.

I need to call my pain management doctor asap. Hopefully I can get a steroid shot lined up for my arm/wrist. The downside of being busy is that it blows my hand and arm up. I'm grateful that's all that's fallen apart on me. Could be a lot worse.

Comments

I have carpal tunnel syndrome in my hand/wrist, from the repetitive motion from drawing/typing over time. I also have degenerative arthritis in the right side of my neck and some neurological issues in the arm etc. I'm taking pain meds and other medication for it, and I see a pain management doctor for steroid shots and other treatments. I need to go back but work has kept me busy and I keep pushing it off. I also need to get back to the stretching exercises I learned while in physical therapy. When the situation is bad , like it has been lately, I wear a wrist brace most of the day except when I'm drawing or eating. I also wear it while sleeping. I wasn't born with any issues concerning my arm or hand, but I have had some things happen on my right side over the years that haven't helped -- a car accident at 19 (I was rear-ended), I was paralyzed for a few hours after a football tackle (I was playing in a no-equipment tackle game, which was dumb), and I used to crack my neck all the time and one day I hurt my neck very badly (also dumb). Young folks who draw (or breathe) need to watch how they take care of their hand and bodies. Take breaks, stretch, watch your posture, don't crack your neck, avoid car accidents, don't play tackle football without equipment. Also be careful how you stage dive and watch out for flying elbows and feet in the pit.

It's always on my mind, the next step for both series. I'm hoping Veronica Fish will still be up for bringing it back, schedules and things change so. Beasts will happen even if we need a new artist, Benjamin Dewey's mostly stopped doing interiors and is concentrating on illustration, commercial and design work. Which is understandable, comics are a pain in the ass, arm and bank account. I've had the next Beasts arc on the runway for a few years now, with the first issue half-written. It's the project I'm most committed to emotionally but the schedule's been a mess since the first series for more reasons than there are cats in the Swifties gang (who knew the Swifties gang's name would become a name for a pop singer's worldwide fandom?).

I miss Beasts of Burden and Blackwood too.

your arm.... were you born with a special sensitivity or weakness to body or arm that makes it hurt so much? or is it all from 40 years of drawing?
