An Interview W/The Comics Journal Site From 2021

I came across this interview that I did with Robert Newsome for the Comics Journal website while looking something up online. Figured I'd post a link to it for the hell of it. It talks about some career and emotional issues I was going through, some of which I've turned a corner on in the last year or so (fingers crossed), some of which I'm still struggling with. The interview is from April, 2021, around the time that Dark Horse Comics were readying the hardcover Beasts of Burden collection for the "Occupied Territory" arc that Sarah and I wrote and Benjamin Dewey illustrated (recently collected in the Beasts of Burden Omnibus). And also and more importantly when shit was breaking down because of Covid and the miserable response from the administration and many others to the pandemic. What a horribly long four years since, with more horror to come. But I digress. And depress, I guess.

I probably posted this interview here when it was first published, but I figured a repost every once in a while can't hurt.

Robert Newsome is a friend and creator/editor/writer of he Atomic Elbow, an excellent professional wrestling zine. He's also the co-organizer of the FLUKE mini-comics and zine festival held in every year in Athens, Georgia. His zine site can be found here: https://theatomicelbow.bigcartel.com

I'd love to go when/if possible, Robert's mentioned it to me. One of the best signings I ever did was way back in the day at B-Wuxtry. Good Milk & Cheese town back then.

Mr. Noodlesome has reiterated to me in the past week that you always have an invite to Fluke! I can now point you in the direction of a tiny airbnb with Jack Davis glassware, should you desire the swanky accommodations. Bonus nature documentary: every time an animal visits his porch buffet at home, the ring cam pings Devlin’s phone and you can watch the drama unfold while shopping for funny pages.

That interview is bittersweet for me, it was not fully edited and the back half is a mess, even incoherent and incorrect at times, but on the other hand 1) I got a cover interview at TCJ which meant a lot to me even if the interview felt awful to me, and 2) I got to bond with Tom after our marathon 13-hr talk (!!!). I miss Tom a hell of a lot.

Thanks for the reminder. I recently found a copy of CJ #214, that has an interview with you + Tom Spurgeon and your livejournal post about it: https://evandorkin.livejournal.com/4985.html
