What do you think about the Fred and Sam Plotline?

What is your opinion about the Fred (Father) and Sam plotline?

I feel those 2 options were very either or and my opinion doesn't fit either tbh. I do want to see where the story goes but if it went away and became something else I wouldn't cry about it either. Sam if just a dick, we all know this but at this point I feel like Fred is just as bad, or almost. Also I was very disappointed with his mother just up and leaving the MC at the very first chance she got to be with Fred again. I think she forgave him too quickly and wouldn't have walked away from her son so easily after the years of heartbreak and anguish. She didn't even put up a fight when Fred said the MC can't be trusted, I mean, WTF?
