The Cincinnati Comic Expo was this past weekend and it was a lot of fun! I got to hang out with several old friends and meet a bunch of new folks and, of course, get a lot of sketching in! Mostly it was a lot of sketch cards, but on Sunday I got to take part in my first ever Sketch Duel! For those of you that don't know (because I basically didn't right up until I was actually doing one, lol), a sketch duel is a bit like a panel where they get a handful of artist up on stage and the audience picks a subject for them to draw, "Who's Line Is It Anyway"-style, and the artist then have a limited amount of time to draw that subject while also answering questions from the audience. Our prompt was Jim Henson's Muppits as Lantern Corp members from DC Comics. I was initially going to do something with Animal, but I couldn't decide on which faction he'd be a part of; when suddenly Miss Piggy as a Star Sapphire popped in my head and I knew I had to draw it. To my surprise, I was actually quite pleased with the final result. I knew two of the three artist I was "up against" (though, to my relief, I learned at the last moment that this wasn't really a competition) and I fully expected to end up looking like a scrub compared to them, but I really think I held my own. Afterwords, the artwork was raffled off to audience members and the winner of my sketch told me that she really liked pigs, so it all worked out really well. Ultimately, it proved to be a real highlight to the whole weekend, and I really hope I get a chance to do it again sometime.
